I can't really explain why, but despite owning it for over twenty years now, I've never been able to bring myself to finish Final Fantasy 7. I've tried multiple times over the years, and yet somewhere between leaving Midgar and reaching Costa del Sol, I just completely lose interest and stop playing. And this is coming from someone who's played and beaten Final Fantasy's 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 10-2 several times. I sometimes wonder if it's just hype backlash; years of hearing how 7 is the best Final Fantasy or the best RPG or the best PS1 game, and yet whenever I try playing it I come away thinking "This is average at best".
A funnier example is having never beat the original Super Mario Bros. As a kid, I could never figure out the trick to Bowser's final castle, and after growing up and learning the secret I didn't have the game anymore and just never bothered finding a new copy of it.
And then there's the games I've technically beaten, but not unlocked everything, like Hyrule Warriors, or roguelike games like Binding of Isaac and Dead Cells and such.

There are entire game franchises I bought on Steam deals, play the first game for about three hours then grow bored and never bother installing the sequels/expansions.

you do know there is a character limit for posts dont you?
honestly I couldn't tell you how many games I own and haven't finished, as that list is stupidly long. I get distracted by the new shiny before finishing the last game I bought and I'm only a console player, it's part of why I don own a gaming pc, steam would kill my ban account & the pc storage.

The games I own but haven't even started yet is a long list on their own.

These days, I seem to be more into the idea of video games rather than playing them.
I enjoyed my time with Spiderman on PS4, but I never beat it (and that game is several years old now). I barely started Horizon 2 recently and just felt frustrated with getting a hang of the controls/items and the endless f***ing banter in that game. That is by no means a dismissal of it, I haven't given it a fair chance yet. I think the last game I beat that wasn't something old was maybe The Last of Us 2. Oh, and Hitman 3. I rank that Hitman trilogy (1 + 2 especially) with some of my all-timers in terms of the fun and absurdity I get from that series. Putting on a hat and changing into a t-shirt suddenly makes me a camera man who can set up and interview with my target, where I go upstairs and shoot a hanging moose statue down, shattering it over the poor bastard talking in front of a green screen. It's so stupid and clever at the same time which is a nuance that can be difficult to balance. Someone once said it was akin to Seinfeld with a murder element, and while it's not exactly that, the funny dialog, ridiculous scenarios that occur, and situations you find yourself in do fall in line with that observation. Maybe that's why I love those games so much and be sure to complete them?
Oh yeah OP, I also struggled with those god forsaken labyrinth castles in Mario 1. I learned World 8 as a kid and now it's like muscle memory almost, which made Mario 35 so fun (bring it back!).

off the top of my head: Golden Eye, Metroid Prime - this one I got stuck at the very beginning... I got confused and lost after not figuring out what to do at the start spot, a baseball game with Derek Jeter on the cover-- I swear it cheats in that it never ever lets you win a game
probably a lot more

Hahahahaha. *looks at game library* This. 2/3 of my PS3 library I’ve never beat, I would just keep buying $10-20 games at the WalMart discount bin and I’ve never gotten around to beating most of them. Some of them I haven’t even played

Modern games end at some point?
I don't think I actually "beat" anything since N64, lol.

Persona 3.
I might go back to it one day if I get the itch. But I found the framing the game around a limited passage of time not super fun to work around.

Dark Souls. The quality kinda falls off a cliff in the last third of the game, and I've never been bothered enough to push through it.

Haven't beat the final boss in Blasphemous, and I've had the game for well over a year.
Sure I'll get there, with the Metroidvania games it just often feels like the journey is more satisfying than the destination.

Red Dead 2 - is just too damn big and depressing. Then again, my fault for buying a prequel.
