WADE BARRETT 5 time holder
A man who had terrible luck with the title. His first run was used to put over Ezekiel Jackson. His second run, which started off as a serious push, got waylaid by yet another Miz push, only for them to reverse that decision 24 hours later, only for Vince to decide to put the belt on Curtis Axel! In 2014 he won it as Bad News Barrett only to suffer an injury right as he was destined to move up the card. In 2015 he held it going into the WrestleMania ladder match but was down the list of interest. RYBACK Won the title with a scary powerbomb on Sheamus. Had some messy matches for the title with The Big Show before Kevin Owens decided the Ryback face experiment had to end. That really doesn't do justice to just how bad the 2015 title runs of Barrett and Ryback were. Nowhere near close.
While he held the belt, Barrett lost almost every single match he had, the only match of any note he won was against Ambrose at Fastlane after Dean got DQ'ed for kicking too much ass, and to add insult to injury he had the belt stolen multiple times. It was one of the worst reigns of all time.
Ryback had a run that was better, but then again, the bar was on the ground. Dude won the title in a truly horrible Elimination Chamber contest to crown a new IC Champ in which everything fell apart when Mark Henry got into the match early after his pod broke, and it was in front of a dead crowd in Corpus Christi. Dude won his only title in WWE in one of the worst matches in WWE History then got a staph infection.
Both those runs were awful.

My main memory from that Chamber was thinking at last Sheamus was going to get his IC title run. And being disappointed!

You forgot to bring up Rikishi's title run. Won it from Chris Benoit in June 2000 and lost it two weeks later to Val Venis. He both won and lost it on Smackdown. I don't recall him ever defending the belt and the only notable thing he did during that title run was making it to the King of The Ring finals losing to Kurt Angle.

I don't recall him ever defending the belt and the only notable thing he did during that title run was making it to the King of The Ring finals losing to Kurt Angle. He's on the first post (3 defences, same as Ricochet) - but those defences were a 2 minute DQ win over Benoit the night after King of the Ring, and a double countout with HHH, before losing the belt to Val. His greatest IC title moment was after winning the belt, with that Fully Loaded Cage match. Despite that, he now has his 3 lines on a forgettable title reign, too. Rikishi himself said he knew the IC title reign was going to be pointless when it was Tony Garea sent to tell him he was winning it!

This is awesome stuff, man. Now I kinda wish we got Stan Hansen or Ernie Ladd as Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion.

Wait, how the f*** did Apollo have 5 defenses?! He's the inspiration for this thread. I made a quip last week about Ricochet being on defence 3, and when was the last time anyone did that? And EoE: Well There's Your Problem pointed out that Apollo Crews actually had! So I went to look it up, was surprised (despite having seen all of the damned matches!), and thought this sort of thing could make a good thread. On the 23rd April 2021, Apollo defended the belt against Kevin Owens. From memory, Owens made this a decent match but it had a crap finish. KO hit Crews with his finisher then he stopped to be distracted by Commander Azeez for flipping ages so Apollo could roll him up. On the 30th April 2021, he defended the belt against Big E. Big E pretty much dominated him, hit the Big Ending, then Azeez broke up the pinfall for the DQ. This felt like the finish for ALL of the matches, but apparently Azeez interfered in different ways. On 21st May 2021, he defended the belt in a 4 way against Big E, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. This went 20 minutes and was properly great (I mean, it had Zayn and Owens and Big E in it) but is infamous for the finish - when Apollo Crews won due to the return from injury of Aleistar Black who took out Big E and saved Apollo. And was literally fired by WWE days later despite the entire Smackdown main event being based around him! On 4th June 2021, he defended the belt against Kevin Owens. This time Azeez injured Kevin Owens backstage before the match, so Kevin played the entire match injured and fighting from beneath, so all the good spots were him, before he got re-injured in a brutal apron spot (storyline only) and pinned. On the 13th August, Apollo Crews lost the title to Nakamura. The first two were infuriating, the 4 way was great but the finish is infuriating due to Vince/Nick Khan, and the last was a different spin on events, but as usual Kevin Owens got no revenge whatsoever for heels being shitheads to him. No wonder he turned heel!

Now here's a scary thought.
Had Jinder won the IC belt from Ricochet, he would just be a Tag title reign away from becoming a Grand Slam champion.

Ricochet will defend the IC title next week on Smackdown against SHANKY.
This is his 4th defence of the IC title, putting him on par with Ricky Steamboat and Lance Storm.
Will he retain to move above them in the all time table?
(Yes, it's been taped already, but we wont reveal spoilers in this thread. Matches will be counted when televised. Only fair, imo.)

Ricochet beat Shanky in a 3 minute sub-par match. Hey, Rico's underrated, not a miracle worker. He has now successfully moved to 4 title defences, which puts him level as mentioned earlier with Lance Storm. And to think we thought this would be the spot for offbeat shenanigans...
Ricochet will now at the worst tie Apollo Crews and Sami Zayn for 5 defences, as well as old favourites Drew McIntyre and The British Bulldog.
Still a bit of time to see if he can overtake Nakamura and Balor on 6 defences. Rome wasn't built in a day - this is the fastest number of successful title defences since Big E's 2021 reign.

I continue to find it maddening that Miz is on the show without the IC title, it’s such a ready made storyline for him to go for the IC record. Certainly a better use of his time that hanging out with Theory. Also A Whole Bunch of Chosen Ones...
THE MIZ 8 time holder
The Miz held the belt 8 times. Surprisingly he only won it for the first time in 2012, on RAW 1000, and that was a three month reign where he took on Rey, Cody and his common nemesis Kofi Kingston. He traded the belt over 24 hours with Wade Barrett in 2013 during an aborted face turn, then had two weird runs, including his second 24 hour only run in 2014. It was his 2016 run with the belt that made Miz better known with the belt, as he won it the night after WrestleMania and held it for the next six months, defending it against the likes of Kalisto and Darren Young, before getting involved in yet another feud with Dolph Ziggler. He then swapped the belt with Dean Ambrose, before his biggest moment with the belt, pinning Roman Reigns to win it. Soon after that he lost the belt to Seth Rollins, and he hasn’t been near it since. A reminder that this is the last time Roman Reigns properly lost a feud.

Did I miss Kerry von Erich? Did I miss Kerry von Erich? Texas Tornado? I don’t see him either I see him on Page 1. *innocent face* The list on Page 1 goes to 88 champions, so there should be no annoyingly missing names now. Bar Savio Vega. Yeah, I know, I wanted to count you too, Savio, but it is what it is.

Ricochet vs Gunther (WALTER) for the belt has been announced for this week's Smackdown.
In other news, Ricochet's title run will come to an end in 5 days.

Tonight's the night. Ricochet's 5th defence of the IC title.
On precedent, probably the first match after the opening promo on Smackdown, so by my watch I give Ricochet another 15 hours with the IC title.

I was pessimistic. It was sixteen hours. TITLE CHANGE!!!The reign of Gunther (WALTER) is here. He is the 89th person to hold the prestigious IC title, and his reign is already longer than Shane Douglas's.
Ricochet's reign promised little at the start, built quick well, but then in typical WWE fashion, the WWE forgot about him having it for 4 weeks before dropping it. He finished on 5 defences, which puts him level with hall of famers (Roddy Piper), World Champions (Drew McIntyre) and, err, Apollo Crews. Since we started at such a low ebb, there's no doubting Ricochet's run exceeded expectations. However, the fighting champ part the WWE got bored of after 4 defences in 6 weeks, so there's a strong feeling of "was good, could have been far better". Still, Pat McAfee thanked him for making the IC title feel important, which was a nice touch, and let's see if they remember he still exists in 3 months time, or if this is Apollo Crews Mark 2.
If Gunther is a fighting champion, we could be here a while. But this is WWE. We've said this before.
Anyhow, the king is dead, long live the king!

Gunther had his first defence of the IC title last night, rather squashing Ricochet. (Those two have some really good chemistry together btw)
This means that our man is no longer in danger of Shane Douglasing his IC title run.

Given that Shane was literally only champion for like seconds, there was never a threat of that happening with him.
