Gunther defended the title against Riddle at Money in the Bank. It was OK. 12 defences now, and with his next defence, Gunther will move into the top 30 for most IC title defences.
Will it be unlucky number thirteen however? He seems to be on course for a Summerslam showdown with my main man, Drew Mac.

Gunther defended his IC title for the 13th time at Summerslam in a match with Drew McIntyre which was decent, but nowhere near as good as those two men could have had.
Gunther then defended his belt for the 14th time on RAW, against the rapidly gaining momentum/popularity Chad Gable. Gable held his own in a fine underdog/monster fight, and actually won the match by count out. They need to wrestle again.
Gunther can at worst lose his title on Defence #15, which means he will enter the top 25 on page 1 for title defences.
He has now defended the IC title more than the previous four champions combined.

I can't remember a thing about Apollo, Sami or Ricochet's reigns and Nakamura might be one of the worst champs ever because of how rarely he defended it.

I'll defend Ricochet here as he covers over half the number of the previous four in a two month spell. Oh and Sami. Won it clean, bragged about it being a great title, then WWE twigged they didn't want Johnny Knoxville to pin a champ so Zayn lost the belt inside a month. But Apollo's five month reign and Nakamura jobbing out in non title matches there's no defence for.

Defence #15 - Gunther defeated Chad Gable by pinfall to retain the Intercontinental Championship, and ended the Honky Tonk Man's record as longest reigning champion. The match took a while to get going, for which we can blame the 8 minutes of adverts the WWE added to it, but the final 5 minute stretch was some great stuff. Over live to Imperium HQ where we hear the champion has a shit eating grin...

Gunther defended his ic title for the sixteenth time, beating Ciampa. Good match but not as good as it would have been five years ago when Ciampa was less beaten down.
Gunther is now level with Eddie Guerrero for title defences and has Jeff Hardy in his sights.

It was hurt a little by the crowd caring less for Ciampa than they do Gable, but I thought it was still strong stuff, the closing minutes in particular.

Gunther defended his Intercontinental Championship for the seventeenth time, beating Bronson Reed in a hoss showdown. He has now equaled the number of title defences Jeff Hardy made, in considerably fewer reigns.

At Survivor Series, Gunther beat Miz to defend the IC title for the eighteenth time.
On RAW before Christmas, Gunther beat Miz to defend the IC title for the nineteenth time.
Even facing Gunther, Miz bores me, sorry.
This means Gunther will at least get to 20 defences, which is as many as Edge managed with 5 IC title reigns.

29/1/2024 - Gunther defeated Kofi Kingston to retain the IC title. Kofi looked better than he has done for years but Gunther took everything he had, including dives from the barricade, and then hit a barrage of offence to win.
19/2/2024 - Gunther defeated Jey Uso to retain the IC title. Jey dominated large chunks of the end sequence and had the title won but for an appearance of his brother. Gunther won just, which I didn't like but many others did.
These were the 20th and 21st defences of Gunther's title run.

In his 22nd defence of the title, at WrestleMania 40, Gunther lost the IC title in a thrilling encounter with Sami Zayn, after Zayn unleashed his old ROH favourite, the top rope brainbuster. The King is dead, long live the King. Sami Zayn is now a 4 time IC Champion.
