Gunther had his first defence of the IC title last night, rather squashing Ricochet. (Those two have some really good chemistry together btw) This means that our man is no longer in danger of Shane Douglasing his IC title run. Given that Shane was literally only champion for like seconds, there was never a threat of that happening with him. Shane Douglas is slightly more notorious for losing the belt at the first possible hurdle than Braun or The Big Show, tbf.

Yep. which is why I said Gunther was never at any threat of getting the Douglas treatment. Douglas got to celebrate for what, 7 seconds? Then Ramon came out and basically squashed him.

Forgot to update my own thread.
On 12th August 2022, Gunther defended his IC title successfully for the second time, in a damn fine war of a match with Shinsuke Nakamura.
This Saturday, he defends his title against Sheamus. Cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of war!

Have to say I'd be happy to see either Gunther or Sheamus win this match, I feel Gunther is the right sort of character to give the IC title the prestige it deserves with a long run, and Sheamoose deserves the grand slam accolade, if only for a short run.

Gunther now on four defences after two incredible matches with Sheamus. Ricochet had a decent reign but for quality matches, Gunther's having the best reign in ages here.

Gunther defeats Rey Mysterio in another great match to get to FIVE successful defences of the belt. This is the first time that has been achieved by a first time champion since Ric Flair in 2005/6.
What a great reign this is!

What a great reign this is! I will level with you: I knew Flair won the IC title from Carlito during their feud, but I had no idea he ever successfully defended it at all.

Didn't he defend it vs. Triple H in a cage match at one of the Taboo Tuesday PPVs?

I'll level with you - I had no idea till I started this thread! 19th September 2005, RAW - beat Carlito in a rematch that went 20 minutes. Taboo Tuesday - Beat HHH in the Cage. 7th November, RAW - Defended the belt against Rob Conway. (Rob Conway!!!) 9th December, RAW - Defended the belt against Jonathan Coachman. (WTF?) New Years Revolution - vs Edge, won by DQ 20th February 2006, RAW - lost to Shelton It's not exactly a great litany of title defences. Though Albert got to 6 defending the belt on Heat against Tommy Dreamer and Justin Credible.

Usually I complain about long title reigns, but I'd be more than happy to see GUNTHER hold it until at least WM. This reign's been so damn good.

Him losing the title at Mania to Sheamus is surely the only way to go right? I’m sure people are still frothing at the mouth for another match between the two.

Title vs. Career with Sheamus winning is still my dream match, but I could see GUNTHER facing Drew as well.

Gunther is on 6 successful defences after another incredible match with Ricochet. He'll now equal Kane at the worst.
What a f***ing title run this is.

Love the old school approach they have took with this with him just putting the title on the biggest high it has been in years and you can tell this is setting him up for a future WWE title run
Cole does a great job every week describing him as the working mans champion which is what that title has stood for. The presentation is money and the small tweaks they have made have worked

Gunther had his 7th successful defence of the IC title, beating Braun Strowman in a big hoss fight last week on Smackdown. It took a while to build but wound up being quite good, and a very rare clean loss for Strowman.
This means Gunther will now overtake Kane with his next title match, and he is on the verge of the top 40.

Gunther has defeated Madcap Moss in his eighth successful title defence. The crowd was very much f*** your underdog performance we want Gunther.
He'll be at worst level with shamrock for title defences now and is edging closer to the longer title reigns, untroubled in the record books since the eighties.

One of the sole good bits about Mania night 2, Gunther defeated Drew and Sheamus to make it nine successful title defences.
Gunther's reign length (5th longest IC reign of all time) is being measured elsewhere.
I don't think in terms of title defence match quality that there is much argument about this being one of, if not the greatest title run in WWE this century.

Gunther defeated Xavier Woods on Smackdown last week to make it ten successful defences of the IC title.
Gunther's one title run is now longer than all of Jericho's IC title runs combined. Jericho's still way ahead on title defences though, thanks to existing during the Attitude era. (He once had 3 IC title defences in one night on RAW. It made sense in context.)

Really liking this thread. Good job ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) It's always interesting to look at the list and be like "I hey I forgot they were champion". 2 names I'm quite surprised have not been IC champion are John Cena and Sheamus, the only Title both need to become Grand Slam Champions. Sheamus they missed the boat on. Imagine him with the white-strap IC title. It'd look like a ridiculous bellybutton piercing

Gunther beat Ali at the Saudi Arabia PPV to make 11 successful defences. Sorry, don't watch the Saudi PPVs so missed that one for a week.
