Seems like back in the day, every so often one of the belts would change hands at a house show — keeps the ticket-buyer engaged that he might see something special when WWE comes to his hometown.
Now the WWE championship rarely shifted this way, although it has happened (Bret Hart over Ric Flair for instance), but at least every few years it seems like one of titles would be won/lost off TV/PPV.
I’m wondering if anyone knows the last time it happened. (I don’t know if the 247 title has ever changed at a house show, but if it has let’s not count that — any of the tag, IC, U.S., WWE, Universal is what I’m talking about).
Got to wondering this today for some reason. Appreciate any help anyone has any info.

Styles beating Owens for the US title at MSG in 2017 I think. Last one before that was that Colons/Air Boom tag title switch in 2012. Then I think the last one before that was La Resistance winning the tag titles in 2004 or 2005. So unless I'm forgetting something there's only been three in the last 18 years.
I've always thought it's something they should do more as I think it would go a long way in helping ticket sales in that you might actually see something. I know they are designed for families and to make young fans happy as the format for years has always been faces win all the matches unless the heel is champion then heel wins but face beats them up afterwards to keep kiddies happy. It just makes it so predictable though and really gives you no reason to go. Although with the constant heel dominance over the last year I guess it wouldn't be that be bad as at least a reprieve even if you know nothing is canon or matters at all.

Bret's win over Flair was a dark match at a TV taping, not a house show.
Andrade won the U.S. Title from Rey Mysterio at an MSG house show in December 2019.

I don't get why people always say Bret/Flair was a house show. Same with the Natural Disasters beating Money Inc. from the same year. They were clearly at TV tapings and were both even on Home Video releases. I completely forgot about that Andrade/Mysterio switch. Andrade's whole run was kind of forgettable though. I can't really remember anything he did from an angle-feud standpoint.

The Disasters' win is fun to watch because the commentary from Jim Ross and Bobby Heenan was clearly recorded after Typhoon had become The Shockmaster, and they make jokes about his WCW debut where he tripped and fell.

The Disasters' win is fun to watch because the commentary from Jim Ross and Bobby Heenan was clearly recorded after Typhoon had become The Shockmaster, and they make jokes about his WCW debut where he tripped and fell. I also found it funny how they were treating it like Ross and Heenan were calling it as if were live as it was happening even though Ross was still in WCW when the match took place. I also loved the big smile on Earthquake's face after he scored the winning pin. Dude seemed so genuinely happy. Really made you realize how important all the titles were back then and how it was really a big accomplishment to win one. It was also amusing how they would alternate between praising one Natural Disaster and burying the other depending on which one was on the outs with the company at the time. Like in this match Ross and Heenan were burying Typhoon as he was in WCW at the time and making fun of him for being a clutz and making wink wink jokes about the Shockmaster debacle. At the same time though they are putting Earthquake over big time as I think he was in talks to come back when the video was being released as they are saying how he's the stronger half of the team and going on about tough he is and having a threshold of pain that rivals even the Undertaker. Then seven months later after Earthquake quit the company again in the middle of a feud with Yokozuna forcing them to bring Typhoon back, the commentators are burying Earthquake and saying Typhoon was the better half of the team

A couple of others I remember
Samoa Joe beating Finn Balor for the NXT title in 2016.
Nunzio defeated Juventud for the Cruiserweight Championship at a house show in Italy in 2005.

Didn't Edge get some big title win at a house show way back in the long long ago?

Didn't Edge get some big title win at a house show way back in the long long ago? Edge beat Jeff Jarrett to win the Intercontinental Title at a live event in Toronto, but then Jarrett won it back the next night at Fully Loaded.

There were four title changes on house shows in 2007. Mickie James won the Women's Title in Paris, reportedly by mistake, when Victoria failed to kick out of a pin attempt in a triple threat. As a result, Jonathan Coachman granted Melina an immediate rematch, which she won to regain the title.
Later in the year, during a tour of South Africa, Paul London and Brian Kendrick defeated Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch in Cape Town, then lost them back three nights later in Johannesburg.

What was the logic behind doing title changes in dark matches rather than on the TV shows they were filming anyway? Was it just to sell more copies of the video releases?

I would guess. Only reason I can think of. What makes it weird is they didn't even show footage of the finishes on TV. They would just have one of those Update segments with Mean Gene where he would break news of the title change and the new champion(s) would cut a quick promo.
