Today, I watched the first Avatar for the first time. I thought it was pretty okay. So I decided to go see the second one today and it was my first time seeing a movie in IMAX 3D. It was a pretty nice experience. I feel kind of locked into seeing the next one though, but I don't think I can wait a decade for it. I suppose i may not have a choice either. I still vividly remember how it felt to watch the first Avatar in imax 3D. No repeat viewing ever came close to that night. It was incredibly immersive. I didn’t see the original in IMAX 3D, just Real3D but it was still such an experience. The way even small minor details like specks of dirt looked like they were flying at my face had me mesmerized.

I saw last night, and it visually amazing to see. The fx artists really did an amazing feat. And I thought the action scenes were really good.
That said, it did not need to be 3 hours long. James, you did not need to keep us holding our pee in for such a long time.

I know people hate the whole “Avatar is the highest growing movie of all time and didn’t leave any kind of cultural footprint” talk…. But….the sequel is the highest grossing movie in the world and I don’t hear anyone talking about it IRL and never think about it unless I see this thread.
No one is going to talk about this one either.

I mean I’ll be honest, outside of the sports bonding scenes, no one really talks about either Top Gun film unless they are like you know actively watching it. And that’s fine too. Not everything needs to be constantly dissected and digested by fandom discussion. If anything that can sometimes make some series worse on the whole(looking at you Star Wars…).

See I heard about Top Gun everywhere for so long I finally broke down and watched the thing. It’s funny you picked that since that’s the one that very much broke through in my world.

That works for 90 minute flicks, but something that goes close to 3 and a half hours, that's pushing it.

Expected to cross the billion mark by tomorrow. If it doesn’t reach it with today’s take. It got to $955 million worldwide after yesterday. So today or tomorrow will push it across. Either way, $1 billion in two weeks.

Still not sure if I wanna bother checking it out though.

Curious what the ceiling will be but it looks better than okay so far.

Made 1.029 billion. Safe to say Avatar franchise has a lot of life in it.

Pretty easy to break a billion when the "real" way to see the movie is over $20 a pop.

Turning into a real "but noone I know voted for Nixon!" situation here; I feel like I don't know anywho who's seen it, or at least those who have didn't care about it enough to really say much about it, yet here it is crossing $1 billion already.
Guess there really is still juice in the "you need to see this IN A THEATER" concept for some mega blockbusters.

I never thought it would do THIS well. Cameron knows how to draw crowds That and given how many of the MCU films this year have done compared to other major blockbusters(which to be clear has still been really good, like most films would kill to have the box office takes of these films), there does seem to be a bit of a MCU fatigue and people still absolutely want to see major blockbusters in theaters. That’s pretty much the only way I can explain why the only billion dollar earners this year have been non-MCU blockbusters(though to be fair Doctor Strange did only fall $45 million short of the mark).

Guess there really is still juice in the "you need to see this IN A THEATER" concept for some mega blockbusters. It does seem like the overwhelming majority of box office is coming from international theaters. IIRC it was underperforming in the US its first weekend, but maybe it had staying power. And I think that's in spite of it not showing in Russia or China, which is impressive.

I’m sure everyone there is wearing all the Roman Reigns merch I never saw anyone wearing even in crowds at wrestling shows from 2014-2019 when he was the top merch mover.
