Turning into a real "but noone I know voted for Nixon!" situation here; I feel like I don't know anywho who's seen it, or at least those who have didn't care about it enough to really say much about it, yet here it is crossing $1 billion already. Guess there really is still juice in the "you need to see this IN A THEATER" concept for some mega blockbusters. It does seem like the overwhelming majority of box office is coming from international theaters. IIRC it was underperforming in the US its first weekend, but maybe it had staying power. And I think that's in spite of it not showing in Russia or China, which is impressive. It did have a release in China.

Oh if it was showing in China, then I rescind my "that's really impressive" statement lol. Considering they were the main driving force of the first Avatar's financial success.

And I think that's in spite of it not showing in Russia or China, which is impressive. Yeah, almost 75% of the box office is from international markets. It's not performing badly in the U.S., but it's already falling behind other big hitters from the last 12 months, and even the first movie. | Avatar: The Way of Water | Top Gun: Maverick | Black Panther: Wakanda Forever | Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness | Spider-Man: No Way Home | Avatar | Opening Weekend | $134,100,226 | $126,707,459 | $181,339,761 | $187,420,998 | $260,138,569 | $77,025,481 | 2nd Weekend | $63,338,220 | $90,037,011 | $66,482,266 | $61,755,804 | $84,548,505 | $75,617,133 |
It will still be one of the highest grossing movies of all time, but even this early on it's not looking like it's going to have anything close to the legs of the first movie.

So far as Avatar’s characters- and I’m going to put the historical allegories aside for a moment, that’s a whole nother subject- I don’t think they’re horrible or anything, the problem more is that the Navis are so noble and the military humans are so over the top evil that I figure it just comes off corny to some people.
To me they did a better job with this movie showing Sulley’s faults, some alright character development for Quaritch, and having his family feel distinct enough to keep me interested for the most part, even if I did feel the movie dragged at points and could have gotten to the points faster.

It makes sense that a movie whose main draw is "looks really pretty" would do great globally.

I liked it.
Did this movie really need to happen?
No.
Will I go back and see more of these?
Sure.

Jemaine Clement being in this was also very distracting…
Every time he was on screen I wanted to shout!
It’s business time!

Reaching 2 billion isn't impossible for it

I'm seeing this tomorrow with some friends and contributing to the Avatar brand's continual lack of cultural impact.

It will still be one of the highest grossing movies of all time, but even this early on it's not looking like it's going to have anything close to the legs of the first movie. Avatar posted a 0% drop in its third weekend from its second, so those legs are holding up. It’s also outgrosssed both Black Panther & Doctor Strange domestically and internationally at this point, so that chart’s a bit misleading.

It’s also outgrosssed both Black Panther & Doctor Strange domestically and internationally at this point, so that chart’s a bit misleading. Data from one week ago no longer accurately reflects the whole picture. Shocking. It took a steep drop off from weekend one to weekend two, just like the rest. Unlike the rest it has bucked the trend of continuing to drop in the third weekend (and, in fact, rose slightly). The big test will be how it fares now the holiday season is over. As you said, it's now outgrossed two of those movies in both markets, will pass Top Gun: Maverick in the next 24 hours, and has taken half of the original's total gross in three weeks. The original's strength was in its legs, as it was in theatres for ten months, so it's definitely not beyond the realm of possibility of Way of Water chasing it down and overtaking it if it holds up even half as well.

It's alright. Probably about 20 or 30 minutes too long, and some of the complaints about how the plot drives forwards are warranted.
Mostly packed screening during the middle of the afternoon. The CGI looked great, but that should be expected 13 years after the first movie. Though I think the 3D in the original was much more impressive because of the variety of textures and depths in the Na'vi forests versus the Na'vi oceans.
What was very weird, however, is that the movie in 3D looked like a video game. Not in the "these SFX look bad like a cheap video game," which some people have probably said. Instead, the movie looked like it was projecting at 60 FPS (or higher?). The image was very sharp though it looked like a very large version of the soap opera effect that people hate about HD TVs.
I'd be open to see a third Avatar movie that comes out eventually.

Parts of the movie do run at 48fps, which does produce that soap opera-like effect.

To explain the frame rate thing, some of the screenings for the film(many of them being the 3D screenings, are HFR, or high frame rate, showings. Literally meaning the have a higher frame rate than the other screenings. 😅

I don't really get it since I hated the first one and always thought the art design in this series was ugly as hell but hey, if people want to see it good for them and good for it, I've got no qualms.

That's coo;! Thinking about it some more, the HFR really helped sell the 3D and the SFX, especially the mo-capped performances. The last fight in the movie in particular was great to look at just for the visual of blues, blacks, and oranges filling out the shapes and contours of characters reacting to whatever circumstances were happening. (very vague to avoid spoilers) I don't think I'll actively seek out this movie again any time soon, but I'll always appreciate The Way of Water for existing precisely because of how it blew holes through the walled garden of internet discourse.

That box office is looking really healthy, it might even take the top spot until Cocaine Bear makes 3 billion dollars.
