Yep, that's definitely a 90s commercial alright.

So, about this ad. It was presented at E3 1995 and was the announcement that Sega had shadow-launched the Saturn to certain US retailers on the exact same day. In May. Months before the actual planned launch in September. This pissed off retailers who weren't a part of it, notably Wal Mart and Best Buy, so they didn't sell the Saturn. So their big launch ad being a nonsensical 1990s spoogefest is apropos.

I remember buying the Saturn, cost me £400 and there were very few games available for it. I got VF and Daytona, I then realised that as my TV at the time (I was temping at the time so a lot of moving around, so anything other than a portable telly was out) didn't have a scart port so I had to run it through my VCR player...
Good times.

got mine by trading in my SNES and all the games, as i wanted sega rally, and also got virtua cop 2
didn't get many other games for it, but thoroughly enjoyed the two sega worldwide soccer games, as well as reading the sega saturn magazine and playing the demos

North America getting weird, incomprehensible ads about the Saturn, while Japan got the incredible Segata Sanshiro ads (about a karate man who kicks people's asses for not playing Saturn) really sums everything up about why Saturn failed in the USA.

Compare that to Nintendo's promotional material:
which was also silly but
A). Actually showed you footage of the game for more than 3 seconds at a time
and
B). Didn't give you a headache.
This is why I preferred Nintendo's ads and marketing to Sega's at the time.

Well if they didn't have this weird antagonistic relationship with the US branch maybe they would have not cut them off at the knees and helped the Saturn in the US. Also let's be honest if sega of Japan knew what they were doing their Genesis numbers would be comparable to the Us ones. The genesis sold 18 mil in the us compared to 5.75 of the Saturn and 3.5 of the Mega drive in Japan so wow what an amazing ad campaign the Japan Saturn had that got no where near the Genesis and wasn't that blow away great compared to the mega drive in the region

This is why I preferred Nintendo's ads and marketing to Sega's at the time. Yeah that’s a great point. This video feels exactly what 1994 was. Appealing to kids but also teens and younger adults. So this video was perfect for the demographic Nintendo wanted to market too. I have no clue what Sega was marketing the Saturn too with those ads. The Donkey Kong video made me want to play the game, even though I’ve played DKC a crap ton of times, while I don’t really have a desire to play anything on Sega Saturn.

Since a lot of the best games for the Saturn costs more than rent, I tend to collect games for it that's just as available for the ps1. Of course it's support that's too little too late ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

At least from a Western perspective, the poor Saturn has left the smallest footprint of major consoles. Didn't get some of its best games localized, emulation of it has been a pain until very recently, and even ports of the original games are hard to come by.
Heck the Game Boy Color had maybe two years as a significant console, and it feels like it had a bigger legacy.

Still not as good as the Dreamcast commercials with all the characters inside the machine.
Can’t find it, but I always loved this one Dreamcast spot where a Ready 2 Rumble boxer starts hitting on Sarah from Virtua Fighter and Tails is arguing with this basketball player, and the player’s like “shut up, quadruped!”
