Imagine if the rest of his AEW run is like this.

On the subject of whether this is all a big work... If the meet and greet thing didn't happen, I would be more inclined to think elaborate work, "Oh he's trying to skip town to not fight Wardlow" Doing that to an event that was scheduled weeks in advance and risking pissing fans off if it's a work is really questionable at best... not that I want there to be real issues mind you.

Obviously I don’t know shit, but here’s why I don’t think it’s a work:
The story of this feud is Wardlow finally getting his revenge on MJF and earning an AEW contract.
This adds nothing to this story and, if anything, greatly detracts from it. It makes zero sense for this to be a work.

There are LAS to JFK flights that depart at 10 P.M. If MJF does fly out somebody should see him at the airport soon.

Honestly the real big wedge difference maker for this versus the Sasha situation is that despite the fact we haven't yet had weeks of dreary statements about MJF "betraying the fans" or whatever, he actually did do that. An autograph signing is actually a thing for the fans that people paid money directly to see MJF for. That is a world away from a match advertised at show start time for Raw that nobody paid money for and let's be real almost nobody really actually cares about in the abstract. And like yeah, I think people should be allowed to quit their jobs and that extends to MJF despite the bait gotcha posts; that's not really what this is about. "I'm not happy with this direction so here's my title, I'm out of here" is not the same as "I want to say but only if I get more money on my terms and since I haven't I'm no-showing the Fan Fest and probably walking out on a major PPV storyline that's been positioned as one of the show's top matches and built for months".

The only even half plausible thing there if this isn't real is he spaced on time doing something else and was like mother f***er let's use this.

On the subject of whether this is all a big work... We went from MJF pinning Punk in Chicago and legit crying because of it to this in months....how? The problem with MJF if is that he has no "off mode" when he's in public. I love MJF the performer and honestly, the few snippets I've seen of the guy in "off mode" make him seem genuinely likeable, too. Keeping up kayfabe in 2022 is cringe as f***, though. Worked shoots are/were almost always cringe. For every "pipebomb" there's 25 more or so 2000 WCW's. Kayfabe is dead. Stop trying to make backstage nonsense the new kayfabe. Let us just enjoy wrestling. I don't give a shit about contracts, I don't give a shit about what goes on backstage in terms of how it affects what I see in ring. I know what I'm watching is a performance, stop trying to blend the two. It's hokey, it's awful, it sucks. /rant over.

On the subject of whether this is all a big work... MJF's character is basically Tony Clifton before he was introduced to scotch and pasta.

I’m the “I hate what Vince Russo has done to pro wrestling” guy and there isn’t the same kind of “logic” here as with other stuff, it’s just hard for me not to look at all this and think there is a degree of working here because it feels way too suspicious and appropriate to what MJF has been doing but then also it’d be way too elaborate and potentially fan affecting for it to actually not be real and now my head hurts and I hate everything.

If this is a Summerslam 1991 situation, then yeah, just write MJF a check to do the match, have Wardlow kill him, and then fire MJF after the match is over. This type of stuff can't be tolerated.

A weird aside: when people were talking about Vince’s insistence on people finishing up their dates, I thought of a House of Hardcore show I went to. The Broken Hardys were in the co-main but a couple weeks before the show, they made their shocking return at Wrestlemania. Despite being the Raw tag team champions, they still worked that HoH show.
The weird part is I just remembered MJF was on that card as well.

Tinfoil time: What is Nick Khan offered him a bounty to no-show and get fired?

I don’t want to feed into the work stuff, but wasn’t there some tweet or report that said not only was the Danielson leg getting stuck a work, but it was a test run for AEW doing another weird work thing? I swear I saw that somewhere.

I completely agree. MJF has no excuse for this if everything is as it seems and, if there was any justice, would be blackballed from any major company for doing so. You can't screw over fans to this extent.

The Broken Hardys were in the co-main but a couple weeks before the show, they made their shocking return at Wrestlemania. Despite being the Raw tag team champions, they still worked that HoH show. The weird part is I just remembered MJF was on that card as well. That's not unusual. WWE generally lets outside talents finish their previously booked dates before bringing them in. And in some circumstances, continues to let them wrestle outside of the company if they can't start immediately. Sarray's situation is a good example of that. She got stuck over in Japan during the pandemic and WWE let her wrestle as much as she wanted while she was over there. The only date she couldn't keep was her STARDOM match against Mayu, but that wasn't because of WWE, and more because Sarray had gotten ill and had to miss the show. It's why I think WWE probably isn't going to take a serious look at MJF if he's walking out and not finishing his dates because of this. Because WWE actively encourages talents to finish their previous obligations first. If MJF had walked out AFTER putting Wardlow over, I doubt this would be anywhere near as bad. Tinfoil time: What is Nick Khan offered him a bounty to no-show and get fired? Zero percent chance. It would be a clear cut case of contract tampering, which WWE has actively tried to avoid since they tried it on ROH at one point but got caught.
