When I subscribed to Nintendo Power, the company sent me a making-of video to promote Donkey Kong Country. There was a Nintendo 64 one, and I’d swear one other I’m forgetting, along with the DKC one. I might still have them somewhere, I don’t remember. There was a Pokemon one as well.

I remember getting a GameShark for the Nintendo 64 and it came with a tutorial VHS hosted by some British guy. It lasted about 15 minutes at max.
I also remember being at Blockbuster and seeing a VHS related to Street Fighter II Turbo and wondering what it was. Fast forward to the mid-to-late-aughts (I am sure it was either 2006 or 2007) and found that it was only seven minutes long.

There were tapes of cartoon shows that consisted of one episode of the show in question. Yeah, I had a bunch of GI Joe, Transformers, and Ninja Turtle ones. I remmber the DIC TMNT releases having TWO episodes on them

When anime first started being released commercially in North America in the 90s, you'd be buying it at one OAV/movie or two TV episodes to the VHS tape, at $30 a pop ($35 for the subbed tapes; that's Canadian so probably knock ten bucks off for US prices).
It was not at all rage-inducing when a tv series you'd bought thirteen tapes of at those prices came out in a DVD box set for about $50 for the whole thing about five years later.

I had two Dino-Riders tapes that each had ONE 22-minute episode…with eight minutes of TONKA toy commercials spread throughout.
The VHS release *had commercials* in it.

Ah VHS tapes. They were great stuff when you look back on them. I don’t remember if I had any short VHS tapes. I know that the Thomas the tank engine show(the good UK one with ringo Starr not the rubbish now) had loads of episodes on them but I don’t remember how long the VHS tape was. There was a skill to recording stuff on VHS and then there was the horror when it got caught in the machine and trying to save the tape. And there’s the whole LP and SP stuff and just putting on a tape that had loads of labels on it with different names on it and just seeing what was on it. There was recording music videos off the TV. I know 2022 and the 21st is much better in so many ways but there’s some things I really really miss about the 1990s and early 2000s.

One nitpick I have about some animated series DVDs is that they leave the commercial break bumpers in. Like “GI Joe will return right after these messages” followed immediately by “Now back to GI Joe!” As a completist I can appreciate they want to even include those bumpers. But if you’re binging the show and watch say 5 episodes you’re going to hear those exact same bumpers 15 times. I wish they had an option where if they include the bumpers you can also watch them without bumpers.

I remember Nickelodeon hyping up a Rugrats Vacation (when they go to vegas) it wasn’t much longer than a regular episode.
