In case you're wondering, yes, Dan Orlovsky did get roundly mocked for this list.

These lists are impossible because where do you rank someone like Johnny Unitas who didn't play in this era with wide open offenses and a ruleset designed to make offenses borderline unstoppable.
It's always such a silly thing to try to do a legit top 5 or so list.

You'd almost have to do a top 5 by era because even the game of Marino and Montana is a way different beast than what Rodgers or Mahomes play.

Elway is the only big miss. Patrick Mahomes at 2 is ridiculous, but Joe Montana not in the top-5 is actually indefensible. I actually love Montana, but he's the guy an entire generation was used to being THE QB. Montana also had the benefit of probably still the best WR ever, and one of the best offensive minds ever as his coach. He was probably overrated before the modern era based on rings. He's probably underrated now. To me, he'd probably be 4, but I don't think it's wild to not rank him. Mahomes is currently getting overrated IMO, but it's weird to put him anywhere with so much of his career left. I do think this era is overrated when you always have to consider that all-time is usually marked by a certain QB versus their era. So these video game numbers are lost on Mahomes or Rodgers when guys like Jameis Winston or Justin Herbert or DeShaun Watson have had more passing yards. The numbers and the arm talent vs. their era is in favor of guys like Marino, Manning, Unitas. Elway was gutsy, but almost nothing really stands out to me. The years he won the SB, TD averaged about 150 yards rushing a game, 5.5 yards/carry, and 11 TDs in 7 games. Shanny had an amazing running scheme for many years. He wasn't a terribly accurate passer even for his era. Led the league in yards once, and never led in TDs or comp %.

In case you're wondering, yes, Dan Orlovsky did get roundly mocked for this list. Why do they keep giving a platform to a man who ran out of his own endzone for a safety?

I have a really hard time putting an active QB on that list. And that includes guys whose careers are clearly in their twilight like Rodgers (well, maybe not a year or two away from retirement status like Rodgers or Brady this year, but I want to see a whole career's worth of work, generally). We just don't know what Mahomes will be in 5-10 years' time. If he ended his career now, he'd be a shoe-in for Canton. But "Best Of All Time" is as much about long-term, sustained excellence as anything. For all we know, Mahomes has a massive drop-off like Russell Wilson a few years from now. Or he suffers a horrible injury that he never quite recovers fully from.

Or he suffers a horrible injury that he never quite recovers fully from. Yeah, like Baker Mayfield seemed destined to be a great Quarterback for The Browns when he first started, he looked great, and what did he do? Get seriously injured, and then he tried to play through it, and made it even worse, never been the same since Now the dude is legitimately lucky to be a Journeyman fill-in, completely bombed in Carolina (Though to be fair... it was Matt Rhule's Panthers) his career was headed towards the skids, if not for that comeback vs Vegas giving him likely some merit to sign and compete on a desperate team, or even stay backed up to Stafford next season. Some peeps really take that stuff for granted, say what you want about Brady and Rodgers, even Wilson, they avoided a lot of serious injuries for the majority of their careers, and it's why they became so coveted, and were able to have the careers they they did or still do, even if Rodgers and Wilson's decline with age is really starting to show, barring bounceback years. And that's not even going into what happened to Tua this season, like we might've seen a Quarterbacks star burn as bright as it ever has and then flame out all in one season. I hope he can bounce back but that Bengals game is beginning to look more and more like it changed the trajectory of his career forever... and Brock Purdy's UCL injury might put him out all of next season depending on how he recovers from it, because it turned out to be that nasty, a Quarterback on a seven game win streak, came out of nowhere as possibly the greatest Mr. Irrelevant of all time... and he's another one whose career might never be the same... three Niners Quarterbacks with serious potentially career altering injuries this season, insanity.

Sure, in retrospect Bradshaw and Montana don't seem outrageously capable compared to some of the modern QBs, but the game was different then and they were so much more successful than their contemporaries of their times. Fran Tarkenton can make similar claims despite having no rings. Considering what he could do at the time, I could only imagine how dominant he would have been under modern rules. Not every legendary QB can claim to be as enticing in that manner. The thought of Bart Starr or Johnny Unitas in the modern NFL don't conjure the same excitement.

Football is an odd duck in way that the prototypes of today's game were in eras that just didn't allow them to truly flourish, if that makes sense. Fran, Steve Young, Marino, Moon & Y.A. Tittle would've probably been monsters in this era because they were ahead of curve in what it means to be a QB.

They also do not belong in the conversation for best QB ever. Winning is great, but it tends to get a bit overrated in terms of all-time ranks. Are Yogi Berra or Derek Jeter the best baseball player of all time? No, and they're not really close. The 90s Cowboys and 70s Steelers were great all over the field, with 16 other HOFers including their head coach.

Bradshaw's only in the Hall because of the rings. He doesn't belong anywhere near a Top QB of all time list unless it's just about the Steelers.

Had to have said this to get publicity, Joe Montana is on everybodies top five list.
And Patrick Mahomes could be hit by a bus tomorrow and never play again. I think he’s destined to be an all time great barring injuries but he’s not too five now, not even close

Bradshaw's only in the Hall because of the rings. He doesn't belong anywhere near a Top QB of all time list unless it's just about the Steelers. There's something to be said for being a consistent winner. Kirk Cousins has a skill set that is vastly superior to Bradshaw, but Bradshaw was a consistent winner. No wilting in the playoffs. No panicking during prime time. Mediocre QBs can win a title. Mediocre QBs don't have what it takes to win titles consistently. Sure, his team being talented helps, but we are not talking about a few years spurt like Aikman. Bradshaw was the QB during a prolonged period of excellence.
