...a sci-fi, horror movie was released to negative reviews & failed at the box office. But, over time, it has been re-appraised as one of the best sci-fi & horror movies of all time...also one of the most gory! Let's chat about this classic!

Never cared for it. Preferred the original.
Incidentally, Blade Runner also came out on the same day.

I didn't like it as a kid, but I think it was mostly because I never watched it from the beginning. It would be on TV, and would always seem to find it around the part where Norris changes.
I watched it again about a decade ago and it's excellent. Great ensemble and great special effects.
When I went about evaluating my favorite movies, I think that John Carpenter might be my favorite director based on how consistent he was and how many of my favorite movies he directed.
Assault on Precinct 13 Halloween The Fog The Thing Christine Big Trouble in Little China They Live In the Mouth of Madness Vampires
I might've said Speilberg, but the only movie I think I've enjoyed of his over the last 20 years has been Lincoln.

What really helps it, is that along with it's fantastic practical effects, it's also got great acting & great suspense...that blood testing scene being probably the best example.

Kurt Russell isn't quite as sexy as Mary Elizabeth Winstead, so the prequel is clearly the better movie.

still not seen the "prequel" but obviously it's THE classic scifi horror, along with alien super deep, SUPER bleak and super in just everything it does on the screen ... and with that ubiquitously unknown ending, you really never know exactly what is going on or how it outcomes, and that makes it the WAY above average type of this genre ALSO bloody nasty monster etc which isn't actually, it's a teeny tiny wee thing really!!! probably saw it first on later night tv, or on vhs have an idea for the final part of the trilogy, where that particular bottle is sold to some rich idiot and he keeps it in his office block ...

Did anyone play the PS2 game?
It's a sequel to the movie. And has a cool "trust" feature, where your group of soldiers gets more suspicious as time goes on and you have assuage thier fears.

The Thing just wanted it's truck back for the next season of Ice Road Truckers, but Russell had other plans.
