Rhaenyra and Laenor discussing their tastes was probably based on this passage from A World of Ice and Fire:
Laenor Velaryon was now nineteen years of age yet had never shown any interest in women. Instead he surrounded himself with handsome squires of his own age and was said to prefer their company. But Grand Maester Mellos dismissed this concern out of hand. “What of it?” he is supposed to have said. “I am not fond of fish, but when fish is served, I eat it.” Thus was the match decided.

so I guess it's safe to say that Daemon has crossed from cool bad boy to complete and unrepentant dickhead now (if he wasn't there already). whose up for some hamburgers? Yeah, it’s clear he isn’t the guy with a grand plan. He’s just someone who enjoys chaos

that last episode was literally an episode of two halves first half was lovely, full of little moments and sweetness, daemon taking rhaenyra about town ... then OH BOY does all that get a good kicking! alicent getting the bores daemon forcing his niece to fully comprehend her duties, in some very unscrupulous ways and king daddy viserys curb stomping and clearly still blootered brother ... the way he just turns up at the red keep is hilarious! but before that it's the sudden turn by viserys to rhaenyra, as he shows her the dagger, with the sudden stopping of the music too now then, anyone want some tea?

Well, may as well chuck in another random trope seen as they're crossing off so many others.
I swear this show is just 'pick a bastard.'
There is no one to root for, and as soon as anyone gets any time to develop as a character they either reveal themselves to be a bastard or an idiot.

I thought it was refreshingly free of that actually, nobody is a Little finger, Ramsey or Joffrey. I think it's clear one of the themes is they're all products of peace and war/other battles will show who they really are. For now they're all just trying to do their best with the cards they've been dealt, knowing things will soon go to shit. Daemon is the main exception but even he is more self-hating than safe-serving. If it was just power he wanted he could have took the throne long before now if he really wanted it.

Perhaps bastard is too strong a word - but there is no clear protagonist, no one you really want to see turn out ok. It's realistic in that that's real life, everyone has their greys, but I'm not sure it makes compelling TV. You need at least one character you can cheer on, who isn't an idiot, a bastard or just so flippant as to appear self centred or uncaring. There isnt anyone like that in this show. Every time they develop a character more, that character becomes more unlikeable. I've read the book so I know that's sort of to be expected, but I thought they might try a bit harder to force a protagonist, at least for a season or two.

Paddy Considine has stolen the show for me so far.
He's done a great job showing that Viserys, for all of his generosity and compassion, just isn't fit to rule such a den of vipers. You can be as kind as you want and have all the best intentions you want but, if you're surrounded by the Otto Hightowers and Prince Daemon's of the world, it won't matter. You'll always be outplayed and picked apart by them.

I almost start feeling sorry for Viserys until you remember he sacrificed his wife for a son However, you do legit believe he just wants to be a peaceful King without strife but is too foolish to realize all the crazy shit around and doesn't want that to mess up his bliss. He does love his daughter and you do understand his frustrations with her as a teenager growing up just being a pain in his ass with her attitude. Everyone has their major faults in between whatever good they are trying to process in their brain In a weird way, everyone is right in their own takes but take their points too far

When his whole council spends all of their time debating succession and petty rivalries when his wife and son had just died and he's still in mourning, you can see why.

We need to see more of the guy who started ragdolling wedding guests. Think he's Lyonels son. Harlan Strong, 'Breakbones' to his friends. He is Lyonel's eldest son and brother to Larys, the guy with with hunchback who tried to be budget Littelfinger with the Queen.

When Larys is telling Alicent about the tea he mentions a flower that is from Braavos and is thriving in King's landing. Behind that flower is a lemon tree. That is almost certainly a reference to Daenerys' childhood memory of a house with a red door and a lemon tree outside her window in Braavos. There are several clues in the book that lemon trees would not grow in Braavos, so that the memory may be false as to the location. As you might except, there is an incredible amount of analysis about that lemon tree.

With the wait for the books everything has been picked to death. On any overly analytical discussion on r/asoiaf there is usually a comment like "GRRM please, we're discussing Dothraki soup temperatures and melting gold" Though the lemon tree GRRM has actually commented on several times in response to fan questions A summary - dayneheiress.wordpress.com/lemongate/

I wonder if we will have the important Tully characters featured - Lord Grover, his grandson Lord Elmo, and his sons Lord Kermit and Ser Oscar.
