I keep trying to get into this show, but I dunno, I just haven't yet. Like, with GoT, I was hooked immediately, but this one I just can't seem to care about any of these characters just yet. I am really enjoying HotD, but I totally understand where you're coming from. Game of Thrones was always really good about having enough shades of gray with all of its characters, that there were people to root for throughout. HotD so far is like "Everybody Sucks Here: The Series." I am enjoying the story and the intrigue, but I do not have any clue who to root for. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW} And to make it all worse, when they FINALLY had a couple of characters I felt like I could get behind, they were killed within the hour. It's Westeros, any likable or decent characters there is get killed off leaving only a bunch of dickheads around.

I haven't watched any of the show yet, but in the story of the Dance, I thought the Blacks were slightly more likeable than the Greens. Or at least I liked Rhaenyra more than Aegon. I also liked Cregan Stark a lot just because of how interesting his very short, but very important role in things was.
I think it's a pretty realistic portrayal (well, besides the whole dragons thing) of the chaos a succession crisis-turns civil war brings. It isn't really black and white in who the clear good guys and bad guys are. There's heroes and villains on both sides. Either way, a lot of innocent people who just want to be able to live their lives are caught in the middle.

Also it wasn't acknowledged but Visrys being okay with a wedding between his grandson and his daughter
And Alicent only rejecting because she believes (she knows) her nephew to be a bastard

Also it wasn't acknowledged but Visrys being okay with a wedding between his grandson and his daughter And Alicent only rejecting because she believes (she knows) her nephew to be a bastard I mean, that's the Targaryens for you, since incest among the noble houses was the way of Valyria to "keep the blood pure." The rest of the realm grudgingly goes along with it, though it took Maegor to like, basically roast the Faith Militant alive with Balerion to beat the Faith of the Seven into submission. Until then, they declared any of the Targaryen children born of siblings to be abominations, though first cousins were generally acceptable.
Also why there was so much inter-marriage between the Targaryens and Velaryons. Both Valyrian families (the Celtigars are also of Valyrian heritage, though they're really not that prominent; the Baratheons also have heritage of Valyria through founder Orys who married the daughter of the last Storm King during Aegon's Conquest). That way, you could keep the blood of Old Valyria "pure" while also being a lot less incestuous.

Yeah, I know I just find it funny with how they go about it and the lines they won't cross like the obvious ones being close intermediate family (brother/sister) but everything else outside of that is fair game.

Brother/sister isn't unheard of for the Targs either tbf. It is certainly less common but far from unheard of.

Closer in time to the show, Jaehaerys (Viserys's father) and Alysanne

Jaehaerys I and Alysanne are also two of the most fondly remembered and beloved of the Targaryen dynasty. Though he had to follow up Maegor, so not exactly a high bar lol.

It’s also heavily implied that Jaehaerys become very senile and Alysanne went mad as well with grief. Which led to the great council because of the succession issues it caused. Better than Maegor but, as you say, very low bar.

There are only a handful of people involved with the Dance of the Dragons story that I'd say are decent people. Two of them Northerners who we won't see for some time. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}Cregan Stark and Roderick Dustin A.K.A "Roddy the Ruin. Lots of interesting characters. Not many "good" characters.

Also, if Helaena(Alicent and Viserys' daughter) is a dragon dreamer that can see things before they happen then while that may start off as a cool ability, it's going to make things VERY depressing later on.

so how did everyone take to the new actresses playing rhaenyra and alicent?
i think it was a completely seamless transition, especially alicent, with all her body language foibles ... rhaenyra though was a bit more tougher, but she still has that grit and absolute determination, and she had a nice easy intro to the series!

Aemond is as bad as I imagined him in Fire and Blood.
Kid does have balls of steel.
