For me, it's two heel turns 20 years apart with Steve Austin in 2001 and Becky Lynch in 2021. I fully admit that it was probably a terrible financial decision for the company to turn their top faces when people were still wanting to cheer them but I personally found them highly entertaining as heels.
You had these ultra serious, badass babyface characters and overnight they completely flipped. Austin was now a paranoid little man wearing cowboy hats, playing the guitar and arguing with Angle over who gets to hug Vince first and Becky started wearing the most ridiculously over the top outfits, having nervous breakdowns every time something didn't go her way and just generally being a goof.
I think they both also had some of the best matches of their careers. They were on fire in-ring during their heel runs.

Basically any time the legends beat up a current star that I don’t give two shits for.

I’m fully aware that the Embrace The Hate was a terrible and nonsensical storyline. It made Eve look trashy, it didn’t elevate Cardona/Zack Ryder in the slightest. That said, I loved it. It was stupidly hilarious all the way through. Ryder and Cena acting like doofs. with Cena in a Ryder wig, Kane trying to burn people and pushing Ryder off the ramp. It was magnificent.
Based Boss Man 1999. He was like a really dark character from a weird early morning Adult Swim show that wandered onto Raw. He’s having so much fun being the most evil and effed up man alive.

Goldberg vs Hogan on Nitro. I was 7 years old and couldn’t yet convince my mum to purchase ppvs. Getting to see that “live” with my pals is one of my favourite wrestling memories.

Becky looking and acting as ridiculous as her husband has made her interesting to me again.

The Invasion (the first part anyway) Yeah, I know, it wasn’t great but at least at the beginning it was still enjoyable for me. I know it should have been the biggest wrestling storyline ever and made an obscene amount of money and they basically killed it by making the focus of the feud the main WWF stars of the past two years and the McMahon family and pushed only Booker T and RVD from the alliance. The fans at first were ravenous for it and the Invasion PPV did a massive buy rate (and is actually not a bad show IMO) but of course, it then farted away in a cloud. It absolutely is a case of what might have been but what we initially did get, I enjoyed it.

I'm sure if they had, say, Nash, Goldberg, Steiner, etc, it'd have helped the star power quite a bit, but I like that some guys like Kanyon were given fun stuff to do and weren't just lost in the fold.

TNA putting up billboards in the neighborhood adjacent to WWE HQ that was so cozy and secluded it looked like it was in rural Japan.

Austin / Rock at Mania 17 might be my favorite Mania main event and I love the finish.

Basically any time the legends beat up a current star that I don’t give two shits for. Agreed the only guys who pulled it off pretty well were Santino in 2007 and Heath Slater in 2012. They were booked as comedy so they pretty much weren't going to be booked as a threat to guys like Cena. and the overacting made it entertaining in spots

Austin / Rock at Mania 17 might be my favorite Mania main event and I love the finish. It sucks that heel Austin screwed up business because it was actually pretty fun. Yeah, they tried too hard with stuff like beating the shit out of the Hardyz and Lita with steel chairs, but neurotic heel Austin jealously guarding his position and wary of Kurt Angle was fun. Makes me wonder if it'd have been different if they'd waited a little longer, like maybe face Austin would have been needed to combat the turbulence that was 2001 wrestling. Then again, maybe it'd have felt too stagnant, Austin's face character by then.

While I wasn't a fan of how many times Becky kept getting one over on Liv, or other faces, I did love the story they told with Becky vs Bianca. Becky couldn't beat Bianca straight up, and she and Bianca knew it. Becky had to win with a cheap shot at SummerSlam. In the rematch, Sasha screwed over Bianca, and then in the triple threat Becky threw Bianca out of the ring stealing the pin from her. Every single time Becky got one up on Bianca, it was by some nefarious means, like a cheap shot or sneak attack or numbers game. She was terrified of Bianca, and Bianca would remind her of what she could do, like the hair whip or cutting Becky's hair when Becky was gonna cut Bianca's. Wrestlemania was there's nobody left to bail out Becky, she wouldn't catch Bianca by surprise, she now had to face Bianca by herself. It was stupid, it was ridiculous, it could have been made by Ed Wood, but it was so fun. Till the Ambulance Match and the night after.

I know that starting the InVasion with Hugh Morrus and Lance Storm and Mike Awesome was atrocious booking, but as a WCW guy primarily, those were My Dudes and I nearly shit myself in excitement when they showed up

Yeah, they tried too hard with stuff like beating the shit out of the Hardyz and Lita with steel chairs Austin aligning with HHH as a crazy, violent asshole was awesome. Unfortunately the Invasion and HHH getting hurt (which I think is underrated thing when we talk about the shift in Austin's heel character) kinda screwed it up

Goldberg vs Hogan on Nitro. I was 7 years old and couldn’t yet convince my mum to purchase ppvs. Getting to see that “live” with my pals is one of my favourite wrestling memories. In the same realm, Luger beating Hogan for the Title on Nitro. I don’t care if it hurt the Road Wild buyrate or lessened Sting’s later win. Luger was over like rover and deserved to be champion, even if only for a week. In general I love how WCW had so many big matches on Nitro. I lived in a small town that didn’t get PPV until late 1999 and our local video stores almost never ordered the WCW tapes. Most of the WCW PPVs I didn’t see until years later. So I appreciate how much of WCW history was given away for free on Nitro.
