Athena's never really done anything for me but I'm hard rooting her for her accomplishments in the field of not being Jade Cargill.

Athena was on the indies for years and generating buzz before WWE got to her, and she was one of the more hyped American women to get signed off of that. I don't think writing her off as being an ex-WWE wrestler like she's coming in TNA style is totally fair. Because you don't like her, sure, that's a personal call. But she's more than just a WWE cast-off. And who else would get it? With natural choice Statlander out, the only other face who's ready and who would benefit is Ruby, who isn't any better on the "WWE low carder" optics. The perception that the ex-NXT champion would get any kind of rub off Jade is a booking accomplishment in and of itself.

One of the only ones I did think that of, Ryder, they then didn't hire and proved me wrong anyway. I did try to phrase the post to lay it out as a specific bugbear of mine - I think too many of the TV featured talent are former WWE people with minimal adjustments, although that is less true lately If Athena's work has had consistent character work, or some kind of through line at any point, I haven't seen it, but I only saw her WWE work and have barely seen her in AEW (I don't watch everything they put out any more) to establish whether she is contributing anything All I have to go on is the confused mess that was her WWE gimmick and that she has a sweet finisher

But incoherence seems kind of ingrained in her, the person.

But I will concede her character work has always been a questionable line straddling where "giant f***in' nerd who adds on stuff she finds cool and presents it nerdily" is usually about where she ends off.

When it comes to big moments I would broadly like as many of them as possible to go to people who are more associated with the promotion - some people came straight in and immediately became essentially a home talent, like Moxley. Athena hasn't been round long - in fact almost none of the women who have come from WWE feel like AEW talents to me really yet but that is as much because of how little TV time the women get as anything else.

I think she is a case where winning the title is what would make her feel more like an AEW wrestler - both by giving her something to do that she would be good at (showing off her wrestling skills and giving ring time to less experienced opponents) and showing that AEW is ready to invest in her.

So any reason we should give a flying f*** about Athena after coming in three months ago to tease a feud, being wrapped up in that feud getting her ass kicked every week that entire time, then losing the blowoff?

Well, that ended with a wet fart.
After dragging this story out for so damn long, and after that great promo Athena had on Rampage. Jade just wins, in less than FIVE MINUTES no less.

I've cooled off on Jade quite a bit after tonight. Still love her look, but she's just not good in the ring yet.

it's weird cause I've actually liked some of Jade's matches. Thought she did well with Anna Jay a couple times, did well with Tay, and did well with AQA but she just doesn't click with people like Athena and Ruby.
At this point I'd honestly have her drop the title to Hayter or Britt.

It is a reverse Bron Breakker situation He's really good in the ring already but is hamstrung being champ so he can't develop his personality

She should not be a champion. A champion should not have to “learn on the job.”
That belt feels like a vanity piece at this point.

It's still a big deal, she just needs to lose the belt. The plan was Arthur Ashe, stick to it. Send Shida.

TK needs to learn that “sticking to the plan” is not always the best option. It’s led to many stories losing heat.
The plan is already screwed. The hometown girl is not available. You just killed the momentum of ANOTHER signee for no good reason.
