I saw this show a few times when I was a kid but it certainly wasn't as popular as other TGIF shows such as Family Matters or Boy Meets World. I'm almost done with season 1 and it is decent. Definitely very similar in format to Family Matters and Full House. Here's a synopsis for those who never watched it. Divorced contractor Frank Lambert and widowed beautician Carol Foster meet, fall in love and quickly get married. Both have three children and when the families all move in together the kids and parents have a lot of learning to do. Shows typically revolve around blending the kids together, getting to know others and being part of a family. So basically it was kind of a 1990s version of the Brady Bunch. Did anyone here watch this show? Did you like it?

It is fun your first time, but not very rewatchable. And I will never forgive them for the non Larry Hagman guest spot.

I only know thw chorus of the theme song, and that Patrick Duffy was on the show.
Btw we need Scuzzlebutt vs Manbearpig on the next South Park special. That will get me to finally subscribe to Paramount+.

I remember watching the early seasons and losing interest sometime around the point where Lily was born. Tried watching an episode about a year later only to discover that Cody was gone and replaced with some dude named Flash and just gave up.

And if you can't do that, at least let his mother be played by Julia Duffy. Yeah you have Suzanne Summers who has a comedy background. She is a comedic actress, on the other hand Patrick Duffy has no comedic background. I remember watching Dallas and how hilarious Bobby Ewing. Actually when you think about it, Larry Hagman went from comedy to drama no problem, but the other way is not as easy.

I always consider Rich that Cody replacement, played by a great voice actor Jason Marsden, but I don't know if that means anything here.

Less said about the final season that aired on CBS during the short lived Friday Night War against ABC, the better

I always consider Rich that Cody replacement, played by a great voice actor Jason Marsden, but I don't if that means anything here. I vaguely remember watching some early Rich episodes, but I was long gone by the time he became a major part of the show. When Cody's actor Sasha Mitchell was arrested, the producers had him written him out pretty quickly, but they still had scripts with him. So they created the Flash character to take his place, including their Disney World episodes. But he didn't last long. The Rich character actually was around during the same season as Cody, being JT high school friend since Cody was already out of high school. The most obvious Cody replacement character though was Bronson Pinchot's Jean-Luc character. He only lasted a season before Pinchot got his own show. I would watch Step by Step every Friday and wouldn't like when my family had something we would go to on Friday since I'd miss an episode. Which is pretty funny since this is a 90s sitcom, its not like there was this strong continuity and if I missed one episode that I would be lost the next week.

Never watched it first run. But for a bit in the mid 90s I didn't have cable. Some local channel aired an hour of Step by Step 6 days a week. Started watching it then and it was ok at best.

They replace Cody? 😲 So far I like the show well enough bingeing it in order. I watched it as a kid but it's different watching it now because I had a very similar upbringing because my dad married my step mom in 1997 when the show was still on and it was very similar because they each had three kids and we all moved into the same house together. I never saw Dallas so this is all I knew Patrick Duffy from. I had no idea until this re-watch that Cody had played his nephew on Dallas as well. 😂 The only kid actor I remember the most was Mark because he was in those popular Beethoven dog movies around the same time.

There was a special episode where the kid with the glasses had a video game addiction. Also, there was another special episode where Suzanne Somer's character was apparently binge eating and it got all dramatic when Patrick Duffy's character was trying to get her to stop eating....while she was pregnant.

It's amazing how many people were introduced, only to just disappear.
Carol's mom and sister were regulars who disappeared after Season 1.
Cody disappeared briefly after he allegedly used his martial arts skills on his real life wife.
Flash was there and gone, I absolutely hated him and his stupid Disney World storyline.
Jean Claude the hairdresser...not Balki's best moment.
Lily ate her vitamins, going from a tiny baby to the Welch's grape juice girl in one season.
Brendon apparently ran away since he was no where to be found in the last season.
Even the opening credits had a different Mark. I remember when I watched back in the 90's I assumed the reason Christopher Castile's version of Mark wasn't riding the roller coaster was because he was a little wimp, but it's because they replaced the original actor and didn't want to reshoot the opening. And what was with that roller coaster being next to a body of water...I doubt the foundation isn't very stable.
Just a side note, one thing that bothered me as a kid was this was supposed to be a modern Brady Bunch, yet all the kids looked random. Karen looked more like a blood relative of JT than she did of Dana. The same thing could be said about Al, who looked more like Mark and Dana. Whatever I guess.

Also, remember randomly thinking bout the show a couple years ago and got bored and looked up what cast was up to:
Suzanne Somers (Carol) basically moved to health stuff. Writing books and promoting healthy products. Although in 2001 she was misdiagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery and radiation before learning the truth in 2008
Patrick Duffy (Frank) continues working mostly independent and TV movies
Brandon Call (JT) retired from acting. Rumored to be working at a gas station/car wash he or his parents own
Christine Lakin (Al) continues acting but also directing. Started a podcast that some former cast have been on
Josh Byrne (Brendan) no one seems to know what he's up to
Sasha Mitchell (Cody) mostly acting in independent movies
Staci Keanan (Dana) left Hollywood and started studying law. She currently is a deputy district attorney in L.A. and law professor at a college in her spare time
Christopher Castile (Mark) left Hollywood. Becoming a teacher. As of 2018 he was a professor of political science at Biola University in La Mirada, California, while also teaching high school U.S. history.
Angela Watson (Karen) basically left Hollywood and sued her parents and won for spending all her tv money while also starting the CAST foundation (Child Actors Supporting Themselves) helping children actors when their parents steal their money. She also stopped communicating with her former cast mates However... In 2020 Watson admitted she was wrong and her parents didn't steal her money. She admitted to being in a abusive relationship at the time with a man who actually stole her money. Basically lied to her and drove her to distant herself from friends and cast mates for 20 years. But with help from friends broke free of him and currently rebuilding relationships with friends and cast mates. She told her story on Christine Lakin podcast

If you watching the intro now its very obvious I was joking, but even as a kid I thought it looked rather silly. Speaking of silly...here's Billy Gunn's music.
