He's gone hollywood. So he may popup here and there. Triple H is in charge now, so you know he will probably protect Flair's legacy as much as he can.
Cena is getting older as well, so time isn't on anyone's side here.
Is it all but too late now for John Cena to chase world championship #17 and break the all-time record?

I think it would be a waste if it wasn’t broken. I mean if he had 15 world titles it wouldn’t be a big deal, but he tied it now so might as well break it. If not him then Orton should

Does Orton have next highest number? Or is it HHH himself?

They'll make Charlotte the breaker of the record

At some point, I really think John Cena will break it and have one last Royal Rumble to Wrestlemania run like the Rock did back in two-thousand and thirteen.

Cena's age has nothing to do with it as long as he stays healthy. This isn't wrestlers from 50 years ago when turning 40 was a time when most guys started winding down.
Cena may have a 10 year window to come back if he wanted to. And if he does, I have no doubt that WWE would be okay with him winning the title. If Goldberg could do it, no doubt Cena can too.

No Reason Cena couldn't take most of the year out from a schedule. Well, I don't know how actor's contracts work in that regard, but for example:
Say he gets back into training around November to prepare for taking bumps, doing spots, ring cardio, etc.
Shows up in January, announces he'll be in the Rumble. Wins the Rumble.
Wins the Title at Wrestlemania.
Defends it at alternating PPVs instead of every month, eventually drops it at Summerslam.

Cena not seeming to care about the record is so stupid. If Goldberg can win titles then Cena should have no issues.
He's been the top guy in an era with two world title, 12+ ppvs a year plus TV defences. He should have smashed the record.
It's like in International football where modern players eventually hold all the records because they play more games.

I wonder if WWE would just rather not bring up Flair even indirectly for this kind of thing.

If it’s not a Ric Flair related thing, hopefully not, it’s still a potentially hot angle.
Funny, years ago the idea of him breaking it would be controversial. But it’s as if Ric’s misadventures have made fans want to see the record go to someone who tries to stay out of trouble and can say “yeah, I messed up” now and then.

With HHH in charge I kind of doubt that anyone breaks Flair’s record at least not while Ric is alive.
It should definitely happen, but I have my doubts.

Isn’t Flair’s real record 21 titles?

Hopefully they let him get the 17th title, he certainly would deserve that distinction over Ric.

Isn’t Flair’s real record 21 titles? Yep, a few they didn't acknowledge like the change in Puerto Rico.

So maybe they will have Cena break the 21 title reign record…but than that may make people sick of Cena again.

I still think even if with the regime change, Cena chasing run #17 is too compelling a “break in case of emergency” situation when business has totally stagnated.

I have no interest in seeing it at all but I think WWE would be stupid not to at least tease it. For a lot of people he is their GOAT so I get it even if I’m not a fan.
