I'm watching with my partner, and while it's an atmospheric film, there's just nobody I can care about or would want to root for. When deception happens, I not only don't care that it happens but don't care for the reason WHY I happens.
Essentially I'm feeling like this is more of a comedy than a drama

The scope and production value in the context of when it was made. From that perspective I get it. From a historical context the film is problematic at best. Honestly I'm not even sure I'd call it one of the best 10 films of 1939.

It is noteworthy for having the first ever Black person win an Academy Award for acting. Yes, the role itself was problematic by 2022 standards, but that accolade was a massively huge deal for Black people at the time.
It's an interesting contrast of both promoting some historically inaccurate myths about the Civil War-era South while also advancing Black roles in cinema by leaps and bounds.

Only seen it once. Was forced to watch it in 7th Grade MS History class. Was bored by it and ended up reading whatever the newest issue of Uncanny X-men was.

Always difficult for a modern audience to judge a film made in another era.

I remember having to see it in theaters when it was rereleased in 1998. Felt like an event to me. One of my favorite films.

It's a boring terrible movie. It feels like it's 7 hours long.
I hate it lol

Standards for "cinematic masterpiece" are completely subjective. I mean, Christopher Nolan – the auteur who directed the Dark Knight trilogy, Interstellar, Inception, Tenet, and Dunkirk – publicly declared The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift a cinematic masterpiece.
Gone with the Wind was a colossal achievement for its time, and nothing can take that away, but both filmmaking and society has changed in the 80 years or so since it was released.

Similarities with Titanic depicts events 80 odd years prior as well as could be done with the production equipment available at the time. Gable and Leigh similar to DiCaprio and Winslet in star power, loved upon release but people had tired of it years later to decide one viewing was enough.

Talk about a boring film. Casablanca at least has this flawlessly-executed gag:

Amazing production values and a wonderful score, but it's just too long for my tastes and I thought it was pretty boring. Give me Casablanca or The Wizard of Oz instead any day.
