As a final note before I go touch some grass for a while: I fully understand that correlation =/= causation and all that, but I gotta be honest and say that something changed in the backstage locker room culture around the time CM Punk showed up. It was like a startup - everyone was getting paid, but everyone was also putting in their best to really get this thing off the ground. Now it's like Tony Khan lost his mind with this whole "cOmPeTiTiOn Is HeAlThY" bullshit and it's killing morale. I'm sorry, but Professional wrestling isn't a f***ing competition. It's play-fighting. JR, despite his crankiness, called it perfectly when he described it as such. It's just play-fighting. That doesn't diminish the work, the risks, or any of that, but it is a medium built on cooperation disguised as competition, not actual f***ing competition. It makes me think that TK might just actually be a money mark after all. Nash said it best: this business?it's a f***ing work. |

A part of me still sees this as work/heel turn. Based on many of the visual cues in the media scrum.
* Punk's uncharacteristic arrogance. We know he's an extremely arrogant person, but his on-screen character (as a face) was never anything like what we saw last night.
* The way he bossed Tony around was almost cartoonish. TK has the reputation as someone who tries too hard to be one of the boys but I feel like the interaction between him and Punk last night was a precursor to him being an on-screen character/manager for a heel Punk.
* Punk eating sweets during the scrum. He was communicating to the audience that he can have his cake and eat it too.
* The timing of his title win. He wore white last night. It's normally a Labor Day tradition to not wear white after the holiday, but it's also symbolic in that he's no longer the hero and has gone 'dark'. The media scrum occurred after midnight (US Eastern time)
* Another thing I noticed is that the major summer angles that occur are hailed as the Summer of Punk. Of course, he was injured over the Summer and is only now resuming the summer angle after Labor Day (normally the unofficial start of Autumn). The Summer of Punk has now turned into The Fall of Punk.

You guys ever see the movie The Founder? It’s about a couple of brothers from southern California who started a little business, and business was good. Then some guy from Illinois got wind of it and forced his way in the door. But then it turned out the guy from Illinois was an asshole and took the business over. It’s interesting. Feels like you might like it.
