Might get backlash for this, but I actually agree with Punk trying to tone down a lot of the AEW style. There have been WAY too many instances of people almost dropped on their neck in AEW. Hell it happened to Hangman on a move that happens 5x every match. I just believe wrestling is a character based business and doing dangerous/cool moves for the sake of it does not really draw money. There are guys at my local indie fed who do the dumbest stunts, but never practice their promo abilities and somehow can't figure out why they don't get booked more or have more of a following. Take Danhausen and OC. Spent TONS of time on the indies, very good workers. When they established characters, they got way more attention. But Punk himself didn't even adhere to that, like when he pulled out the Pepsi Plunge for the first time since he left ROH (and for good reason). If he said that with some self-introspection it'd be one thing. But he comes off like a hypocrite instead.
Also, I think the "AEW style is too dangerous" thing is really overstated. Yeah, you've got people like Sammy Guevara and Darby Allin doing that kinda stuff, but most matches aren't really that different from what other promotions put on. Especially since they have cut down on a bunch of the more overdone spots like the suicide dives or moves on the aprons compared to a couple of years ago.
The aprons are also intentionally further out than on most US-rings, modeled after NJPW's, to make the apron moves easier and safer to do. I remember one of the Bucks talking about it when being asked about the ring. I do think that like WWE, it's a 20x20 ring, not sure if they use cables or ropes, though that's more just a digression on my part. |

I have so much respect and love for the guy. He's a real renaissance man.

He's like the ultimate example of someone who was practically made for AEW. Even if he weren't burned by how his WWE run went, they could not give him the kind of freedom he operates in right now. It's simply not how the WWE machine works, no one has that level of autonomy in the company. |
