So here’s my question, how much has losing Cody hurt AEW? It seems the locker room was better when he was there. Did he handle the talent and issues? Honestly? I don't think it's unrelated. Cody, for any faults, was adored by a lot of the locker room, particularly the younger ones. Still is, really, and many of them put over that he made himself really accessible to talent, with QT Marshall joking that he wished some of the rumors about him being standoffish were bullshit since it would mean there wouldn't be a constant stream of talent going in and out of the locker room he shared with Cody every time. I do think he sounds to have been kind of a diffusing presence sometimes, maybe not for everyone, but he doubtlessly provided some guidance.

I think Tony saw the constant complaining that his show had no surprises and was predictable and has swung the other way to an extreme. Hobbs turning on Starks, Garcia beating Bryan, Mox squashing Punk, and some of the other stuff they've been doing over the last couple months has been unpredictable enough. You don't need any extra extra worked shoot garbage. And on top of it one of Punk's defining career moments is a worked shoot, Tony's a fan so he probably wants to use it somehow.

I still can't get over how egotistical Punk was about MMA. Like, he really thought it was going to be in his benefit to go on the offensive. Even against another newb, didn't Gall at least have amateur experience? Such audacity with nothing to back it up. And he refused to shake his hand at the weigh in.

I mean the entire thing was both an ego trip and pretty dang hypocritical due to his stance on "part timers" and "Celebrities" taking spots and pay from people that have worked their lives to get there...

This isn't a work. But if it was, it'd be an example of a great character ruined by bad presentation.
A spoiled egomaniac who can't let go of any past grudges, can't abide being insulted or ignored, and keeps wanting to talk about 'insider' stuff, professionalism be damned? That would be an amazing and novel megaheel character. But if you're going to pull it off, you absolutely need to get the audience to trust that it's a work. They can't for even a second start to wonder if it's really real, because that would just make the whole thing awkward and uncomfortable.

YEah, like I said no one's response to this has been ooh I can't wait for Punk to get his ass kicked... it's... Wow Punk's an unpleasant asshole that I really don't want to deal with in any capacity.

And it shouldn’t go understated how good Cody is at the media game. They lost their star in that regard In general Cody picked like the exact strategically perfect time to get the hell out of there because 1), he went to WWE at a time they absolutely needed someone like him, and 2), with the timing it reads like he either knew everything was about to go to hell or like he was the only person keeping it from doing so. I can't remember how much overlap, if any, there was between him leaving and Punk coming in. Makes me wonder if he knew Punk's schtick was eventually going to turn toxic, and that played a part in not wanting to be there when it does.

All these years later and it’s still hard to wrap my head around this actually being a thing that happened … MULTIPLE TIMES It’s such a “Day 1, never stepped on a mat before” mistake. Duke’s a pretty solid trainer, but he’s not a f***ing miracle worker.

There was a bit of overlap, like part of why he left was feeling that the main event scene really didn't have room for him anymore as it was not long after Punk's arrival, in addition to thinking being EVP while he was still trying to actively be a wrestler at the highest level was a mistake for him, that he'd have been better off being an EVP when he was winding down or retired.

One day, AEW is going to have a top guy turn heel on the weight of insecurities and a need for the audience to like him that consumes all his morality and makes him go off the deep end into a manipulative, bitter monster who's too far detached from reality to realize that it's that obsession that has turned the audience against him. It'll be tragic. It'll be perfect.
And I won't even think it's there because every time a guy plants the seeds it turns out it's a shoot and he's just actually that insecure about f***ing everything.
