With a few tweaks and a change of perspective dude would have been the most captivating character in the company again. He was so close. He would have been an amazing star once more and instead we got uh. Bad. The crowd wanted heel Cody and he was so dead set on no you are getting babyface and you will like it. Like I did not like NJPW Cody, he felt out of place but his jealous bitch character is money for AEW. For a dude as smart as him, you play up the HHH/Jarrett vibes when you're a heel and you would had a shit ton of babyface opponents to make money off of And hell, if you have Cody run desperately around trying to make the crowd love him with all that insecurity and panic, and you start to feel like he's doing enough to get the crowd jiving with him again, then you have an easy path to have him do something actually heroic and win people back. I know he didn't mean to dress like Homelander but it was so on the nose and he just threw the perfect setup away.

It didn't really help that as weird and experimental as Cody seemed to be trying to be all his feuds followed the exact same format. Someone attacks him, he goes away for awhile, they continue to beat up his friends while he's gone while talking about how Cody's a failure of a man who they've seen through to the true nature of or whatever, he returns and gets revenge. It's a perfectly fine narrative cycle but right in rapid succession he did it with Spears (minus the going away bit, entirely because they didn't have TV in between anyway) and Archer and Brodie and QT and Malakai, and he also brushed up against it during that window of time he was involved in the Darby / Team Taz feud. The only real exceptions to the cycle were the MJF feud and the period when he was doing the TNT title open challenges.

I was one of the foolish few who was totally into it, and honestly believed he was going to play some Homelander type delusional babyface.
I honestly thought if he went all in on the absurdity of it, it would be amazing.
I was thinking Bo Dallas in old school NXT just dialed up to 11 with all the pomp and bullshittery only Cody could evoke.
In my head it was amazing. I was backing him. Defending him. Supporting the absurd promos, and crowd work. It was intentional. It was going somewhere. Right?
In reality I couldn't have been more wrong.
And it's sad because if done right, it would have been something no one else was doing, and it would have been f***ing awesome.

As someone that was firmly thinking "I don't think he's turning I think he's gone in to full cope" at the time? It was f***ing incredible car crash television that for better or worse was like literally nothing else in wrestling. Dude was literally this close to just having a full Mac's Dance segment on TV.

For real, I thought he could have gotten over without the heel turn had they toned down some of the excessive pomp from his entrance and how melodramatic his promos were, etc. He’s a master of building up a big match atmosphere but at some point it felt as if stuff was happening just for shock value’s sake like the Nightmare Factory kicking the shit out of him.
If I was going to turn him heel it wouldn’t be for a really long period of time. At the most I’d have him become a bit power mad and cheat more, more underhanded during his TNT defenses, and then I’d book Cody to be on the verge of doing something horrible, then at the last moment he comes to his senses and helps the other faces or something from a heel beat down.

Cody's weirdness did give us the Armed Anderson and Arn burning his clothes to absorb his powers segments. So there was good too!

It's hard not to feel a bit smug looking back and remembering how many folks on reddit etc. were harping on about "Cody's next level story telling" and how if you don't get what he's doing your stupid.
Nah lads, he was in no way doing the thing you thought he was doing.

I said at the time, Cody felt like a WWE character trapped in AEW, so his presence always stood out. Not necessarily negatively all the time, but certainly towards the end of his run, he seemed like he was on the wrong show. Not surprised at all he got super over as a face in WWE.
If he wasn't going to turn heel in AEW, then there was no point for him to stay and continue on the same path. Would have been a waste of time for everyone involved, including the audience. Plus, it saved us from more Brandi promos, which is always a good thing.

Cody’s babyface character was always the most WWE-like gimmick to exist outside WWE.The only thing that comes close to it is Tanahashi’s “Ace of the Universe” persona. Both tailor-made for WWE.
It’s no surprise Cody was immediately a mega star when he jumped ship.

I wouldn't trust Konnan to tell me what day of the week it is, and I'm someone who's entertained by the guy. Anyway, EVP considerations aside, I just don't think Cody wanted to be a heel. I think he had this whole thing in his mind where he'd be Dusty Jr. and be the people's champion. When it wasn't working out that way for a litany of reasons, he just would not course correct come hell or high water, and it practically killed him dead in AEW. A 6-12 month heel run before running it back to BEING the babyface he wanted to be would have solved everything from a booking point of view, in my opinion. The problem with Cody is that he wanted to present himself like Dusty, but Dusty came off like a good ol' Texas Boy who just so happened to be good at this 'rasslin thing to make some money at it. Cody, even as a face, just doesn't have that kind of respectability or humility about him. I think a heel run where he finally get squished into the dirt and then has to redeem himself and find his lost honor etc. would have put him where he wanted to be, but he just didn't want to do it for whatever reason.
