Imagine going back in time a year and telling a rabid AEW fan that Cody will get over as the giant babyface hero he wants to be….in WWE.
And a vast majority of fans are ready for CM Punk to return to his exile.
What a world.

Honestly everything was going fine for Cody till IMO he just marked out about the fans being back for Double or Nothing on Memorial Day weekend. The Factory feud was a mess but as a whole but the crowd didn't turn on him then. They didn't even really turn on him during the Malakai feud... initially. But they were so clearly building up that Cody needed to find an edge to beat Malakai including having Arn (and really the whole Nightmare Family) get frustrated with him. Even if he didn't go heel he needed some type of change that never came.
In retrospect I also think having Brandi as an on screen character associated with him at all hurt him a lot too. Brandi constantly kept going back to being a cocky heel character while not officially turning (before the maternity leave and when she returned) and it was so easy to boo her, and you put her with Cody and Cody acts ignorant to how she's acting... like maybe if he didn't associate with her on tv him staying face maybe would have worked.
And as mentioned earlier in the thread. In WWE he's a fresh face with fresh opponents which helps but he has a filter. In AEW he did what he wanted and it got to the point where Tony Khan basically separated Cody's stuff from the rest of the roster (thus the CodyVerse) where in WWE whether it was Vince, Triple H, or whoever they'd basically tell Cody this is what we're doing.

His 'why are you booing me I'm right' phase where he was empirically wrong was funny trash TV until I got sick of it and then he left and I learned to never trust anything a wrestler says and now that it's over that entire run is just hilarious with hindsight IF YOU ARE AN INDUSTRY JOURNALIST AND YOU DISAGREE WITH ANYTHING I SAY TONIGHT *YOU ARE NOT A JOURNALIST* Brandi: honey wtf does that mean Cody: NO ONE KNOWS WHAT IT MEANS BUT ITS PROVOCATIVE. GETS THE PEOPLE GOIN.

And just in general less is more for Cody He still has the showboat entrance but it isn't as grandiose. Not having an entourage flanked in his gear also is another thing taken away that helps. He's still a big star without all that and he's able to play the hard working babyface to a new audience who hangs on his words. Obviously, helps that he has a big time heel in Seth he worked with as well

The eternal Cody vs. Malakai Black feud was the funniest thing and of course, it gave us Arn Anderson and his glock. I remember watching that and letting out a loud "WHAT???". Brandi's "You might be a black belt but I'm a BLACK BITCH" line still makes me want to cry. What was she thinking? lmao Also that weird shit with her and Jake Roberts

I think the feuds became formulaic in AEW as well. I was willing to continue to see how things played out but when they started to go towards feuding with ATT before he left it was clear he needed a reset.

All good babyfaces (at least in this era) always eventually hit that wall and need something else to rely on instead of hitting the same well. Another strike against him just way things were structured. Like he took L's in spots when it felt too late. Allin beating him didn't feel as big because it should happened a match before. I still contend he should been in chase mode for the TNT title against Archer
