Been watching some Studio Ghibli films the past few days. Haven't seen them in years. I was kind of worried I might not like them as much as I used to but thankfully that hasn't been the case.
Anyway, I love Mononoke and everything but nothing beats Spirited Away, for me. It's just full of imagination and magic. The animation is incredible and the soundtrack is just something else. I think my favourite scene is when Chihiro and co are on the train. Everything about it is just beautiful. I love this film!!!

All wonderful films but My Neighbour Totoro wins all! On a side note I just saw Goro Miyazakis Earwig and the witch which is a very good movie itself.

Spirited Away is just the best movie in general. Rewatched it on the projector recently and it was like the magic begun all over again.

I go between this and Castle In The Sky for which takes my #2 spot, but those are two of my favorite films period.

this and princess mononoke i've still to watch ... a DECADE after buying them!!!
kikis delivery service is genuinely brilliant, i've yet to see the live action version when marnie was here is unbelievably emotional porco russo is a fantastic little actioner then the goddamn catbus comes and who's riding in it ... BLOODY TANUKIS THATS WHAT!!!
i've still to see the cat returns
the wind rises is very good, although it's subject matter leaves a slightly bitter taste
but if you want smacked about then fireflys and turtles are on the menu!

Oh, no doubt. I would actually argue it was the best movie in 2001. It's a joke that the Oscars created a category for animated movies instead of putting this up against the films of that year.
I still say that Grave of the Fireflies is the best movie of Studio Ghibli, but it's really not comparable in terms of of style.
Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle and to a lesser extent Princess Monoke are also very good.
I never cared much for My Neighbor Totoro, but my girlfriend absolutely loves it. Kiki's Delivery Service just doesn't have a 'fantastic' enough story for it to be better than okay. Ponyo is okay. Proco Rosso was okay. Pom Poco was cute but just okay. The Cat Returns would've probably been better if I was more familiar with the backstory. Whisper of the Heart I watched after The Cat Returns so...yeah. The Wind Rises is comparable to Grave of the Fireflies, but it's just not that interesting overall. And The Red Turtle was very frustrating to sit through. Those are the Studio Ghibli movies I've seen.

Spirited Away is my favorite as well, but I had a big ol' Ghibli marathon in January, and I pretty much liked them all in different ways.

Grave of the Fireflies is the greatest movie I refuse to ever watch again. It’s an emotional dick punch alright. It’s not surprising they double featured it with Totoro. Although that too is baffling if reports are true and they actually ran Totoro first.

The only one I ever watched that did absolutely nothing for me was Ponyo, but I'll have to give it another shot. Especially since I think it is intended for younger viewers, and now I have a mini me to watch things with.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, I know it was before Ghibli was founded but it is considered to be part of their work.

During the first lockdown myself and my daughter binged most of the Studio Ghibli films. She was 5 at the time. Her favourite was Kiki's Delivery Service, mine was Spirited Away.
Shoutouts to Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, The Cat Returns, Pom Poko and Whispers of the Heart too; we loved them. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind I loved but she didn't, think she was a little too young for it.
Honestly, the only ones that didn't land with us was Arietty and When Marnie Was There.

I find it harder to name a movie I didn't love so much that I wouldn't want to rate it against the others. So far, Porco Rosso has the unique distinction of me finding it just ok. If I feel particularly late-spring or early-summer, I'll hum Itsumo Nando Demo.

Grave of the fireflies is probably the best of all and perhaps the best animated film of all time but im the same as many of you guys, its a film that is almost to painful to watch, its absolutley devastating to the soul.

Isao Takahata was very briefly involved with the Dog of Flanders series and interestingly enough, it shares almost the same soul destroying ending with Grave of the Fireflies. Between those and the bombing scene in Barefoot Gen, there's quite a lot of great anime I don't need to see again.
