It seems like most tournaments now are spread out through the weekly shows, it's rare to have a one-night tournament. I prefer the latter, since it adds the element of endurance. Why did they go to the newer, weekly format?

EWR tells me that fans get burned out seeing the same guys over and over in the same night.
Also, most of the roster performs weekly now; where a generation ago they’d routinely be rotated out.

I think the big issue, and Wrestlemania 4 backs this up, is that when guys know they have to do 2 or 3 more matches later the same night, they won't (or can't) put a lot of effort into the early ones. So you end up with 2 rounds of short shitty matches to kick things off.

People getting sick of seeing the same guys over and over has a lot to do with it. I would say to lower injury risk as well but it seems like every week to week tournament WWE does have people who advance getting legit injured resulting in a complete trainwreck.

Really specifically, Vince personally hated them and given that WWE was a monopoly for the better part of two decades setting the tone and template for the industry, we seldom got them.

Another argument I've heard is that even though as fans, we like them, they don't draw in general.

It can be cool sometimes, but it can also get tedious, especially since it's often not going to be the top talent in them, or it's going to be top guys half-assing some of the rounds to not get exhausted/injured.

I love one night tournaments. Like, I am a big fan of Wrestlemania 4 and Starrcade 90 for those tournaments. I'm also aware I'm in the minority these days.

I love the idea of a one night tournament and you can tell some great stories for the people who go deep in the tournament, but I can remember far more bad ones than good ones.
In addition to the number of lackluster short matches, there's also the issue that the booker has a lousy choice between beating a whole bunch of people in one night, or booking a bunch of unsatisfying screwy finishes.

I thought the 1998 Survivor Series tournament was done really well. It made The Rock.

Another argument I've heard is that even though as fans, we like them, they don't draw in general. Which kinda makes sense when you realize by their very nature, tournaments are basically a mystery box in terms of what matches you're actually getting outside of the first round. Which means you either load up the first round and potentially waste your big matches right away (and likely hurt them since one-night tournaments kinda require the first round to be somewhat brief) or you run the risk of people not really buying in just for a CHANCE to see a match they really want to.

I like them, and they've definitely elevated guys like Savage to the next level.
However, I found them boring when I was a young kid, and can understand why others don't care for them.

I've heard this argument too, but I think the counterpoint to this is that when WWE would do them in recent history, they'd always be announced fairly last minute with two weeks or less notice so there's not really a fair way to gauge if they're a draw or not.

Right; like hyping a mystery man back in the day. If they were anyone that would draw, their name would be on the marquee.

Hogan and Andre were all over the advertising and were both given byes to the second round where they would face each other so fans knew for sure they were going to be getting one very big marquee match.

I think something else that hurts them is 90% or more are meaningless. When the KOTR was first around with Bret it had more meaning and was new on the national scene. WrestleMania IV and Survivor Series 98 were both to crown new World Champs.
Now KOTR is a joke, title seem to be decided in battle royals or in some random match, and the rest are, well, poo.

One night is way too much. Even the indies spread them out across a few days now. And doing it that way means you can hook last minute attendees with a hot match in one of the later rounds. And nobody is exhausted by the time of the final.

I think an eight man one night tournament could still work well if we saw some quality sprints - which is one of the few things kind of missing from the indys at this point. Give the first round ten minutes time limits, semi finals twenty and finals thirty - obviously don't go the distance for all of them, but it would give the matches some incentive for speed and conventions the competitors have to work within to tell their story.
