Truthfully, took him forever and a day but if it was up to you....what would've been his first

It’s not easy to say as every time he lost out on an Oscar, the winner that year was a worthy winner so there’s no major “injustice” occasions. There could be an argument for Gilbert Grape in 1994 as it was arguably his strongest role but that was a year where it was a pretty stacked Supporting Actor category (Ralph Fiennes for Schindler’s List, Pete Postlethwaite for In The Name of the Father, John Malkovich for In the Line of Fire and the winner was Tommy Lee Jones for The Fugitive). The one year I’d say he put in the best performance of the nominees was when he finally won in 2016 but even then, I’d put his role in The Revenant lower down on his “best performances” list than many films he was nominated for and didn’t win. My personal favourite performances have been in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Wolf of Wall Street and Django Unchained. But he lost out to Joaquin Phoenix and Matthew McConaughey in the first two (who were both worthy winners) and didn’t get nominated for Django Unchained (probably because Christoph Waltz got the nomination and win for that film).

out of his past nominations, i'd probably go with The Aviator (though i think Don Cheadle should've won for Hotel Rwanda over Leo and Jamie Foxx for Ray)
out of his roles that weren't nominated, probably Calvin Candie in Django Unchained

Could I say possibly never?
Not that I think he's a bad actor, but I don't think he's very good.
I mean, sure he can yell and get so intense that his face turns red, but in regards to little nuanced things that I would characterize with a Daniel Day Lewis, a Paul Muni, a Dustin Hoffman or a Rod Steiger...Leo just isn't there.
Any time he plays someone with an accent, it sticks out in a bad way. Whether it's Blood Diamond, Gangs of New York, or the movie he won with The Revenant...he does some kind of accent that never exists.
I mean I get it, he's got box office draw, and there's nothing wrong with that, but I don't think he's that versatile despite being given many chances to show as much. He's like a modern day Ryan O'Neal..or perhaps an Al Pacino who goes back to the same items that people expect from him.
Who knows, maybe he does have more range but from what I've seen, the stuff he's given isn't that impressive. Again, a lot of yelling and getting angry...and maybe some confused squinting. But never a character that can tell a story just by looking at their face, Leo usually spells it out pretty loudly.
That said, I've liked him in a lot of movies, and there's been a lot of movies where he's taken me out of it.

Honestly, as great as Waltz was in Django Unchained, I'd argue Leo deserved both the nomination and award for best Supporting Actor more than he did for the same movie.

The other five people posting in this thread, but I digress. Sorry. I've just never seen the point in the Oscar's. My favorite actor will never win one.

Also...
Titanic.
I still think, all things considered, it's his best roll.

I was hoping in 20 years, the actor playing Leo in a biopic wins the Oscar for the role, but the real Leo never did.

1954's the cutoff date, as the Oscars were 25 years old at that point.

Easily the first one, it was way better than Secret of the Ooze and Turtles In Time. It occurs to me I may have the wrong Leo…

Think he should of gotten the Best Supporting nomination for Django Unchained instead of Christoph Waltz.
