I don't know who's idea it was to book this segment. These guys were freshly called up from nXt. They had a 364 day tag title run and were looking pretty good. The main roster needed some new life in the tag division and things were looking up when they were called up in January 2015.
Then this segment happened.
They never recovered from this segment. Let's make it perfectly clear, this wasn't a rub. This was a complete burial on the main roster just weeks after being called up.

I've really never understood the complaints about how the Ascension was used when they were first called up because the Ascension in NXT was awful. Pretty much all of their matches were terrible, nobody really seemed to care about them, and they were only champions for so long because there was literally no one else available.
They eventually found a groove with the Breezango stuff and should've gotten more of a shake then, granted.

I think the Road Warriors Lite presentation didn't help, but yes, The Ascension did finally win more fans over with the Breezango skits.

Outside of the Face Paint they were presented almost exactly as they were in NXT. They didn't really have much personality or reason to tag and again they were tag champs forever because they literally had no other teams.

It’s like with Kross’s first main roster run. The anger wasn’t with them not protecting the act, because nobody really cared about The Ascension regardless of how they were booked, it was about them not protecting NXT.

Yeah, the Ascension were asscheeks in every way possible As asscheeks as they were, I would've still rather have seen them then three groups who were all at least a decade past their use by dates.

They did make excellent Jabronis though, and if WWE had given as much of a damn about factions back then as they do now, they would have made excellent goons for a midcard heel.

They should've made more of a thing out of them, Cody, and Barrett together, it was a fun alliance and certainly worked better than just, "He's Goldust but heel," like the Stardust character spent most of its time as.

They were like a comic book villain team. it was great.

They themselves carried themselves basically the same way, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say NXT commentary probably didn't bury them at every available opportunity out of spite, which is what happened when they got called up. Yeah, NXT didn't have better options until they gave the belts to like, who, the Lucha Dragons, who were alright? But I do fail to see how any of that is the Ascension's fault. WWE acted like they were Public Enemy and pissed everyone off when they just... seemingly hadn't done anything but be "okay I guess".

Looking back, it would have been great if Billy Gunn had turned on the rest of DX and teamed with Konnor and Viktor in a beatdown of all the old teams, then announced the formation of The Asscension.

The Judgment Day is basically like the Original Ascension now. The one with Raquel Diaz, Konnor, Bram, Ricardo Rodriguez and Epico. They've both got the dark "Supernatural (TV Show) type vibes. We just need some CGI shots of Balor, Priest, Dom and Rhea on some buildings now.
The tag team version with Konnor and Victor was basically an Illuminati inspired gimmick.
Then they got to the main roster and they became 2 goofs that were trying to be the Legion of Doom.
Ugh.
Thank god Vince is gone man.

this is one of the more random tag team matches I've ever heard of
it's like they threw darts to see who would be in the match

The New Age Outlaws' final match was losing to The Ascension at RR2015. I was gonna say that Too Cool also retired against them in NXT, but they went on to have a run in the indies, so thankfully they escaped that same fate.

It wasn't and isn't the final match that Billy Gunn had, which is at least something.

Trying to book a team like the Road Warriors when one of the members was smaller then the likes of The Miz and Cody Rhodes was an odd choice. I never saw any of their NXT stuff so when they debuted on the main roster I ended up finding them funny with their ridiculous 80's WWF style promos. Only problem was is I guess we were supposed to take them seriously as this dominant ass kicking team and that they were supposed to be in the same vain as the Road Warriors or Demolition.

If Viktor was the same size as Konnor, the team would have failed anyhow. Dude still wouldn't have had the presence and "it", you would just have seen a case of Mattmorganitis.

I think they needed an all out '80's inspired gimmick, complete with work out vignettes, wearing fanny packs, and the camera quality changing for their interviews.
