Do you care about those black bars on the side? Do you care if they zoom in the pic in order to have "hi definition remastering" and it fits the entire screen?
I tried watching One piece on Netflix, since I heard so many good things. Man, I cannot get over when tv companies zoom and crop their shows for an hd tv. It’s so distracting. do they think people can’t handle seeing those black bars on the side? I’d rather have those than the picture zoomed up and have a whole bunch of the picture cut off up top. I remember WWE, they'd either had those weird bars on the sides of their videos on youtube, and on their actual tv shows they'd just blur out the sides.
I was watching some old shows on youtube, and what really surpised me is that some shows (and I think I saw this on some antenna tv substations) is that'll somehow do both. The black bars are still there but they still zoomed in the picture a little.
I wonder if this is just some boomer ness creeping it, like people lamenting the transition from black and white to color. Though, I'm pretty sure there are some people who dislike colorizing old black and white shows.

I watch everything in original aspect ratio unless it's impossible to do so. Black bars can be annoying, but I'll take them any day over stretched out proportions that makes everyone look weird.

Watching St Elsewhere right now. Never even noticed the black bars until I read the post.

I prefer the black bars over having the picture stretched out.

either zoom it to fill, or 4x3 zoom mostly for older movie, 4x3 for tv shows

Depends. Simpsons should be 4:3. Stuff like Married with Children, I don’t care so much.

If it doesn't distract me, it's fine.
Edits, music changes, and such are more disruptive.

I grew up in the age of letterbox movies on VHS having movies have black bars on top and bottom.
I'm fine with something, whether black bars or some special thing, on the sides for older TV.
See also when they port pre-widescreen games with online services or compilation packages.

Felt like I’m watching something special

I want everything I watch to be in the original aspect ratio and not changed, stretched, or altered in any way.

This is why I went out of ny way to hunt down the DBZ Dragon Boxes. As it was the only way to get DBZ in its original aspect ratio in the United States. While the current Blu-ray options are cheaper, I can't stand the cropped forced widescreen version they use for it.

I'd rather have the black bars 100% of the time than being stretched out or zoomed in.

I never bought letterbox VHS, but all of my DVD's I bought were widescreen long before I ever owned a widescreen TV. And put me in the list of people who likes to watch older TV shows in the intended aspect ratio, I can't stand the stretched out versions done for HD channels

I would prefer original aspect ratio but if it's something like Friends where they originally shot widescreen on film that's fine for me as it's not exactly a cinematic masterpiece.

MeTV started broadcasting in widescreen five years ago even though 95% of their shows are not in widescreen. As a result, a lot of their shows have been pillarboxed. Prior to that, the show was full screen. So are you people saying you want the show pillarboxed or stretched to fit a widescreen TV?

What I'm saying is I prefer pillarboxed over stretching or zooming every time but because some shows were shot on film with extra area on the sides I wouldn't mind a widescreen remaster with those areas included if it's a sitcom.
