The Wilpons were weirdly inconsistent in how they spent. Some years, they had payrolls up there with the Yankees, Dodgers, and Red Sox of the game. Some years, they suddenly pretended they were the little engine that could and had a mediocre payroll at best.
There's a lot of shady shit about Steve Cohen, but he's never going to be afraid to spend.

Great defense but bat has been consistently below average over full seasons except for 2022. He should definitely be the shortstop a team settles on when they miss out on Turner, Correa, or Xander.

Fred Wilpon got sole ownership after buying out his partner Nelson Doubleday around 2002; they did spend a lot to build the 2006-2008 Mets teams, but there were two big issues: -They'd spend on the big league roster, but not on any damn thing else. Minor leagues, scouting, the draft, player development, player health and injury prevention, especially not on analytics, they just did absolutely nothing to improve the organizational infrastructure that might've kept the team from hitting so many LOLMETS situations over the years. -Once the Bernie Madoff shit hit the fan, that was that, they weren't going to spend big again (at least not commensurate with being a NYC-sized market team). It's part of why Bud Selig all but forced them to bring Sandy Alderson in circa 2011; Alderson was given the idea he'd finally get to have a real budget to build a team with, but instead he was sent there because he was sort of the grandfather of what became Moneyball and because he'd had some success with limited payrolls in Oakland and San Diego. Basically, even when they did spend big, they did it really, really badly most of the time. Like, bringing in Carlos Beltran? Great move. Not beginning to address a critical lack of pitching depth in the minors, leading to those Beltran teams falling apart in 2007 and 2008 when their bullpens fell apart? Bad move. Hiring Tony Bernazard and him challenging minor league players to fights? Whoops!

Fred McGriff makes the HOF. Still no Bonds but he probably had a better shot making it with the writers voting. Former players who came from that era and did it clean would never vote for Bonds. McGriff was underrated though so good for him. Back-to-back-to-back AAU National Championships.

Very happy to see the Crime Dog voted in.
Wonder what happened to Chipper? They said he was ill and was replaced.

McGriff was underrated though so good for him. Back-to-back-to-back AAU National Championships. A player needed 12 votes from the 16-person committee to be enshrined in Cooperstown. Bonds got less than four votes. That’s 18 percent, about 18 points lower than the worst he’d ever finished in his 10 years on the BBWAA ballot. It’s time to face reality — and it’s a shame — Barry Bonds is never making the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The baseball HoF denying Bonds, Clemens, and others is ridiculous. Anyone with any sense knows that players from at least the 60s on were using everything from amphetamines to steroids to glean a competitive advantage. I don’t much keep track from Bonds era but I’m sure some juicers among his peers have already been enshrined.
Pud Galvin is in despite taking and endorsing monkey testosterone way back when. LMAO

LMAO HOF voters are a bunch of stuck up sanctimonious clowns who try and act like baseball has pure and noble history with 0 skeletons in the closet except for the steroid era where they act like it was the biggest blackeye for the sport eventually that sentiment will change when the old guard dies off completely

There's buzz that Verlander will soon be a Met, with a 2 year deal (3rd year mutual option) worth over $85 million.
The source of that rumor? I swear to God, Carlos Baerga.
Dude's apparently broken a number of signings in recent years, so that kept me from immediately dismissing it as bullshit.

Having Verlander on a short deal as the DeGrom replacement is a smart move, that is if Verlander still has more in the tank.
