My over/under on Daley hating Carlos Correa is 2 years lmfao If it’s that quickly it’s because he’s been injured the entire early going. Lmao

I've been sharply critical of the Red Sox and Chaim Bloom for being skinflints, but it's hard to overly castigate after seeing some of these ghastly contracts that are being handed out this off-season.
Aaron Judge, Trea Turner, Xander Bogaerts, Jacob deGrom, Willson Contreras, and Justin Verlander are all 30+ years old or, in Turner's case, entering his age-30 season. They've signed for a combined $1.3 billion dollars.
I would much rather the Red Sox be patient with the market than spend a small nation's GDP on a free agent who'll almost certainly be diminishing returns about midway through his contract.

I'm disappointed the Cubs have missed on all the SS talent.... but at the same time, these 11-13 year contracts are scary. The Cubs are just coming off a 6 or 7 year deal with Heyward that, despite his speech in Game 7 of the 2016 WS, was an albatross. I can't really blame them for not wanting to deal out a 10 plus year deal. I really wanted Trea Turner... but that was a lot of years (and money) for a guy about to turn 30. I know Swanson is still out there, but I'm already prepared for them to miss on him as well. It is going to sting seeing Willson in a Cardinal uniform (even moreso than when Dexter Fowler signed with them after the WS win).

I still don't like that we signed Contreras, but it seems odd to lump him into that category at essentially 5 yrs/14 mil per that takes him to 35. Versus 37 mil per, 43 mil, and the king's ransom Correa, Xander, Judge, and Trea got that takes those guys to 40 or later.

Cardinals not expected to meet Rodon asking price Figured as much, but still stings. With the Philly, NYM, LA and SD all spending the only way to win the NL anymore is pitching, barring an insane hot streak like the Phils went on.

Mo is looking at the division and determining there's little to no competition still. Probably doesn't see the point. It'll evaporate when all our "pitching depth" goes down in flames again.

Yeah, I feel like we're just so happy to be in that in-between spot of making the "playoffs", but content to not contend. You'd think that the savings on Goldy and Arenado compared to the market value of those guys would be passed on to get a premium FA, but our big splurge this off-season will undoubtedly be replacing our 9 million dollar catcher with a guy making 10 next season. How economical.

My assumption is they feel comfortable with Wainwright, Flaherty, Mikolas, Matz, Montgomery and Hudson. They also still have Liberatore. Wainwright has said this is his last year and Montgomery is in last year of Arb so in theory a Rodon deal lines up perfectly but it is reported he's looking for something like 7/$200M

He just can't stay healthy and is rumored to want out of here as soon as his contract is up. He was supposed to be our next ace, but it's gone as well as the last few "next aces" have (Carlos Martinez, Shelby Miller, Alex Reyes.) Meanwhile, some of our "lower ceiling starters" have developed into Cy Young-caliber players (Sandy Alcantara, Zack Gallen.) Flaherty wil hit the DL in a couple starts, like he always does. Liberatore is a Quadruple A player. So we'll have Waino, JoMo and Mikolas, and a hodgepodge of mediocrity. I don't think Rodon is worth 200 mil, and I doubt he ends up getting that. But I do think the Cards were about as interested in competing for him as Count Homer was in test driving that Bentley.

They are married to Judge for 9 years, got Cole for like another 6, and Giancarlo I think has like another 5 on his deal. If I had to guess, he probably ends up around the 6/$160M range with options and incentives. No trade clause has been a popular bargaining tool as well

I don't think Rodon's quite as high risk as some believe; I've seen write ups based on things like historical trends regarding pitchers who have his profile/history/innings on his arm and, honestly, there's good reason to be pretty hopeful that he'll be worth whatever contract he gets.

I feel like the Giants are the early favorites to win the NL this year. Betting-wise they have the 8th best odds rn. Behind the Dodgers, Mets, Braves, Phils, Padres, Cards, and Brewers in that order.

There have definitely been injury-prone guys who have kicked that label later in their career. But I mean, a 200 mil ask on a 30-year old who has pitched more than 150 innings twice and never more than 180 is a big risk.

The Red Sox just DFA'd infielder Jeter Downs, one of the three players they acquired in the legendarily awful Mookie Betts trade of 2020. Let's travel back in time to February 2020 (and then immediately come right back, knowing what happened in March 2020) and look at how exactly right I was about this deal and its ramifications for the Red Sox.

I still hate all of MLB for refusing to match that offer for Mookie. Idc if he was a rental, even at the time without prospect hindsight that’s a steal.
