They'll just trade him before he hits FA anyway so they don't care about pissing him off

Jeff Passan is on the Michael Kay Show hyping up the pitch clock being the best change to happen to baseball in decades. Between that and getting rid of the extreme shifts, 2 1/2 hour games are going to become the new normal just because pitchers can't dawdle on the mound or hitters can't just step out the box whenever.

I really hope San Diego steps up and gives Manny Machado his worth when he opts out. Dude is an absolute cornerstone of our team, he deserves the money to go with that.

Yeah, while I still think it's an unnecessary rule (again, just enforce the timing rules already on the books!), I went to a midseason Brooklyn Cyclones game this past summer, and all the minor league stadiums have the clock installed. It stood out for a little bit, but it was clear that the players had adjusted to it, and pretty quickly I stopped noticing it. It really is the only rule change so far that actually addresses the "pace of play" in a positive way, since MLB has otherwise seemed obsessed with just shooting its own dick off repeatedly in its pursuit of sub-3 hour games, and again, if it also forces pitchers to stop going max effort on every throw since they won't have as much recovery time then maybe it'll allow more starters to go deeper into games or maybe reduce some injuries, maybe even reduce "three true outcomes" ball...but after a little while, since I don't anticipate all the positive changes to happen immediately.

Yeah I think it's understated how big of a difference the pitch clock will have for the pace of the games. Getting my wife to watch baseball with me is very difficult, but when I do, the one thing that gets her eyes off the TV and onto her phone the fastest is the time in between pitches. I would imagine with Gen Z aged viewers (who MLB is trying to attract) it is a lot harder to keep their attention, so this was an issue MLB had to address. It will take some getting used to but as mentioned after a while the timer will probably just fade into the background for the viewers. I also think the shift ban will end up being a positive, as well as the limit on pick off attempts. Fans want to see athleticism, so more doubles, triples, and stolen bases is going to help fans get engaged, rather than just the three true outcomes on repeat. Look at the NBA in 2001 and compare it to today. It's like a different league now, but they had to adjust some things to improve the entertainment quality of the league, and MLB has to do the same now. I'm excited to see the result on the field.
My only real concern from an on field standpoint is what it does to pitchers. I would imagine some pitchers will be stubborn and will continue the "max effort on every pitch" approach, and with a pitch timer that's just begging for an injury. But as mentioned if/when the pitchers adjust, hopefully it will lead to them going longer in games.

Cubs signed Edwin Rios today, I do not know much about him, but I will take him over Wisdom at 3rd.
I still project Cubs to be around 77 to 79 wins this season.

I will say, if they were truly serious about wanting more doubles and triples in the game...they'd move the fences back in just about every ballpark by 5-10 feet.

2024 offseason already has news
Manny Machado plans to opt out his 5/$150M deal
No real surprise since he has played at an MVP level in SD. Machado wants a 10 year deal and he would most likely be the first player ever to sign two $300M deal (obviously not finishing out his first)
Padres want to bring him back but they have Xander there as insurance and they just gave Darvish a front loaded deal that would take him into his 40's. Will be interesting to see how this goes as SS market got paid heavy this year and he will surpass those deals

I'm honestly curious at how many more hits we get with the shifts abolished. I think we might see some guys averages tick upwards pretty nicely.
Poor Ryan Howard... he was a huge victim of that shit lol

Owners look like they are up to their usual BS again with trying to to create a committee just in case Bally falls off. MLB is trying to work in a streaming service so they can curve blackouts. "Small market owners" are complaining about revenue sharing
It is bullshit how they keep trying pitch for a salary cap but refuse to acknowledge a salary floor. Manfred has no spine tho to make them start spending

The only rule change I would institute is that every pitch is always 3-2 count.
Also, you get to run backwards around the bases if you hit a grand slam.

Does this Nestor Cortes guy balk every pitch or something? All these balk emphasis headlines seem to have him in them.

No. He does the Cueto delivery sometimes and has a tendency to switch his arm slots when pitching. He has this little hesitation he uses He's one of a few guys who will basically have to tinker their delivery. Balks were at its fewest they were in 50 years last season but the pitch clock is going to force guys to work faster so they are going to be on people about their delivery
