If Marty wants me to be on his side of the cinema argument he needs to make a movie where a talking tree make me tear up first

I can think that while also feeling that he’s being needlessly tribalistic. I wouldn't even use tribalistic. I would say he's being a gatekeeper of what or what isn't cinema. I agree with his message and he's made most of my favorite movies of all time. So he's qualified to make those assumptions and opinions. But when people parrot his opinions to look down on someone's film preferences is without the nuance of his arguement and just to shit on folks who enjoy blockbusters and stuff is what I have a problem with. I'm also not a fan of fanboys attacking Marty for his views on CBMs either. The arguments for there have mostly no nuance and are just screaming talking head points.

Marty should be happy, a moderately budgeted indie film is kicking the arse of a $200 million blockbuster at the box office.
Except the blockbuster is his, and the indie film is FNAF. So I doubt he is.

I joke, but I do feel the whole back-and-forth either way is silly and I genuinely am with Martin in appreciating classic cinema and for studios like A24 to not be the only go-to for the hot smaller-budget films. Though I’m still looking forward to The Marvels. My stance is basically “like whatever you want and don’t shame other people if it’s not your thing .” If one’s bored with the MCU, that’s understandable and fine, that Thanos period was very in-your-face with the marketing. But I grew up reading Superman and Captain America books and watching X-Men every Saturday morning, so that’s always gonna be in my wheelhouse.

The MCU should add more doves to win over John Woo.

Director of upcoming popcorn Christmas action revenge thriller Silent Night weighs in. He loves real cinema. Also come see his silent movie version of Death Wish…in theaters soon.

These people lose me every time they try to put what defines cinema into a box that only includes what they have respect for. It’s gatekeeping at the highest level. Something usually reserved for immature boys not well respected artists. Now…Woo is a fun action guy so his opinion doesn’t have much weight…but Marty should know better. He positions himself as a guardian of cinema which was only slightly annoying when it was about movies only being movies in a theater…but became pathetic when he started using his guardianship to define what cinema is. He doesn’t get to do that. No one does. I have watched some truly terrible movies. Not like…Ant Man 3 bad…like…All Jacked Up and Full of Worms bad. Deinfluencer bad. Psycho shot for shot remake bad. And in my worst moments of questioning their purpose or lack of craft…I never once told anyone they aren’t cinema. Because I don’t get to do that. I can give you a thousand reasons that Psycho remake is a disaster…but I can’t deny its existence in the medium. Because that would be insane.

It's amazing that he decided to take a big stand FOR CINEMA when he had something to promote.
Almost like Mr. Woo and Marty are disingenuous as f***.

On the one hand, they're just responding to questions during their movies' press tours, almost certainly asked by hacks looking for the easy clicks when they post the resultant quotes. On the other hand, how hard is it to just answer those questions with a simple "Can we not beat this dead horse any further, please?"

The fact that Woo specifically cited Marty says he knew exactly what conversation he was leaning into.

The fact that Woo specifically cited Marty says he knew exactly what conversation he was leaning into. Yeah. It's beyond tiresome at this point. We get it. Prestige directors and the occasional action director with pretentions of autership look down on popular cinema, news at 11.

Which is at least a change to the usual.
