Rosalind Chao (Chinese-American) as Keiko O'Brien (Japanese). I mean, virtually all successful actors and actresses of any East-Asian descent is going to play a wide array of nationalities. A brief reminder of her career, however, suggests that she may be a bit more selective (or her character’s nationalities are changed when she gets cast). Despite her most famous roles being Japanese (Star Trek) and Korean (M*A*S*H), she either tends to play explicitly Chinese characters or characters whose nationalities is nondescript. The three female leads in Memoirs of a Geisha were mainland Chinese (Zhang Ziyi), Singaporean Chinese (Gong Li), and Malaysian Chinese (Michelle Yeoh), which is somehow even worse considering the history between Japan and China, meaning they pissed off a significant number of people in both nations. That's without even getting into the fact that the movie takes place around the time of the Second World War, and therefore also around the time of the second Sino-Japanese war, which is when Japan committed so many war crimes against China, especially Chinese women. Quiet as it's kept, if this thread were about "actors playing a different ethnicity", you could just about do the thread with just Asian actors, from Korean-American Randall Park playing Taiwanese-American celebrity chef Eddie Huang's father, to both of the Filipino actresses named in the opening post of this thread.

Swedish Dolph Lundgren playing Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. For that matter, Danish Brigitte Nielsen playing his wife, and German-born Romanian Florian Munteanu playing his son. Just watched Creed II again over the holiday.

I’m watching The Wire for the first time, and seeing the extremely-British Idris Elba as Stringer Bell is kinda blowing my mind.

For some reason this thread reminds me of Jared Leto's ridiculous mamma mia that's a spicy meatball attempt at an Italian accent in House of Gucci.
