Just saw this clip. I almost feel bad for him and the sad, indifferent response coming from the audience. Of course they knew he wasn't the champ...but usually when a top, popular face that the people want to get the strap gets his hands on it, the people go wild and respond that YES, this is what we want to see youtu.be/uhq8uSnDJ8wpThis is just bizarre. For me, the biggest shock is that he was still using Stars and Stripes Forever that late into the build to WrestleMania. When did he switch to the theme that would later be known as the Allied Powers' theme music?

When did he switch to the theme that would later be known as the Allied Powers' theme music? well WMX was in late March, and I recall by April 1994 Stars and Stripes Forever was scrapped for the new theme. Figured they decided he wasn't ever getting the belt but also really didn't have much of a plan regarding his immediate future with the company...somewhere along the line it was decided to tone down the American Made/Hero patriotism stuff as it wasn't getting the reaction they thought it would.

A testing the waters by Vince I know Lex wasn’t getting the reaction that he once did but you also have to remember that the crowd was probably dead tired since it was a 780 hour marathon taping that they attended.

Oh...did not know that. Were tapings extremely long back then? I remember watching Superstars and such and just assuming these were prob 90 minute in person shows that they cut down to fit into an hour TV block suppose the timing could've been better for this test. Either at the beginning of the show or when the audience had some fire in

That could've partially been it, but in all seriousness, by that point all the momentum Luger had was slipping away. Just see the reactions between him and Bret Hart at the Rumble over who they saw as the winner. The fans clearly wanted The Hitman. That's why I find the rumor that Luger got drunk and told a news reporter he was going to win the WWF championship at Wrestlemania hoopla. Even if he did, why waste all that time, money, promotion etc etc only to nix it entirely AND ON TOP OF THAT push him down the card immediately thereafter? If the company ever planned and then scrapped the idea of making him WWF champion at Wrestlemania X, it would've been during the build up, not the night before.

If Luger did win the championship they may have had to change the belt design because he just did not look right at all wearing the Eagle.

What a weird segment. I thought taking the title away from the rightful champion and celebrating with it while proclaiming premature victory was something heels did.

Supposedly, this was not done to test fan reaction to Luger but was instead done as a decoy.
Taping date: Feb. 22 Air dates: Mar. 12, Mar. 26, Apr. 2 WrestleMania date: Mar. 20
The story goes that they wanted smart fans to think Luger doing the entrance with the belt would air on one of the post-WM episodes with Cornette's part not being shown.

What a weird segment. I thought taking the title away from the rightful champion and celebrating with it while proclaiming premature victory was something heels did. Because WWE would tape syndication weeks in advance and at least 3 episodes per cycle it was sometimes necessary to have the winner of the upcoming title match appear with the belt at a taping. I know they did it in 1988 with episodes that would air after Summerslam where Warrior would steal the belt from Honky for the night until Honky would steal it back at the end of the night. Now in the case of Luger it was all to work the smart fans. Cornette said that Vince knew they'd report it to the Observer and that's what happened. But it worked because WWE had to do similar things for real in the past.

That just makes them look like idiots for putting this much effort into trying to trick the reporting in the Observer in 1994.

At the taping, Perfect made his entrance with the IC Title, Bret Hart came to ringside, took the belt, and Perfect went running after him. On TV, they skipped that and went straight to Perfect's second entrance without the belt.
