54. Blue Beetle
A slow first half was filled with so many references to family that it could be mistaken for a Fast and Furious movie. Then they throw in a couple of totally illogical twists before the action packed, rather entertaining second half. And of course they included a teaser to set up a sequel. It was a watchable movie..

#526 - Maestro (Netflix)
*1st Viewing
Between Lady Gaga and Carey Mulligan, movies directed by Bradley Cooper are the place to go for Oscar bait performances by great women. [****]
#527 - Austin Powers in Goldmember (Blu-Ray)
*4th Viewing
Danny DeVito as Mini Me is a stroke of genius though the movie peaks there. [**½]

55. Meg 2: The Trench
Bad science, bad decisions, bad acting and bad CGI add up to a terrible movie. So why did I enjoy it so much? It was a whole bunch of cheesy, goofy fun. And I always like it when all the bad guys get what they deserve.

170. Hostage (2005) - Watched this on DVD. Sometime recently, I had gotten the itch to watch this. I also gained an interest in reading the novel version of this (FYI, this film was based on the book of the same name by Robert Crais). Now that I got the book from the library, I decided to watch this film before reading it.
I remember watching it for the first time nearly two years ago (it was in early 2022). I recall enjoying it, even though some bits felt a bit too Hollywood while trying to be a little more grounded suspense/action thriller. Not that it bothered me. I also picked up on stuff this time around in this viewing. Bruce Willis always delivered, and not just on action, but also in his acting because you felt the emotion in some scenes.

171. Clockers - Watched this on Starz on demand. I recall watching this a long time ago and find it to be gritty and compelling. It had been years since I last watched it, so I forgot about certain elements. Also, because I found out this was based on a book (and also because I had been reading a lot lately, if for a while), I wanted to watch it again.
With that said, I still found it to be a gritty story, and a lot of what was told and shown kept me engaged. However, what I found interesting were some elements that were used in Spike Lee's direction. For example, a scene involving a train set and two trains colliding, as well as during an interrogation scene, and the editing of some scenes spliced together with Harvey Keitel talking in various locations. I get where Lee went with that mixed with the storytelling.
I couldn't tell you how the movie is compared to the book. I had read that some other characters were left out of the book, though. As for anything else, I know Martin Scorsese produced this film and was set to direct until Spike Lee was hired to direct it. I am not sure how it would have been if Scorsese directed it because I can't imagine this film without Lee's direction.

172. Crooklyn - Watched this on Starz On Demand. After watching "Clockers" recently, I was in the mood for another Spike Lee film (or "Spike Lee Joint" as they are often called for promotion of his films). I recall seeing parts of this in the past, but not the whole thing. However, I was aware that the film is more of a coming-of-age story, but then I read that a lot of the story elements were based on Spike Lee's personal experiences, and also some family members wrote the script.
The story works on different levels with the family dynamic and the struggles they all go through while living in their Brooklyn neighborhood, whether it's in the household, going to a bodega, or hanging out on the stoops of the brownstone, along with other members of the community having some part in the story. I liked how a lot of the story was told in the perspective of Troy (the little girl), while also having some perspective on her mother's character, played by Alfre Woodard.
Another thing I noticed was during a story arc, the film's picture went into a fishbowl-style of framing. At first, I thought I messed up the picture quality or maybe there was an error done in filming until I read that Spike Lee did that intentionally to give it a "dreamland" feel for those sequences. I am curious about other elements of Spike Lee's trademarks because I recall seeing some of his directorial style in "Do the Right Thing" and "Clockers."
I thought this was a well-told story and it felt a little personal knowing that there were some elements based on real-life experiences. Also, the soundtrack was awesome with all of those classic soul songs from the 1970s, and also that Crooklyn Dodgers track in the credits.

#528 - Unrivaled: Red Wings v Avalanche (ESPN+)

One of the best sports documentaries I've seen. I do wish they would've asked Claude why he never apologized to Draper though. It's this hanging thing over the doc that goes unanswered. [****½]
#529 - Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (Netflix)

Pretty sure this is the most Zack Snyder movie to ever Zack Snyder and that's not a good thing. [*½]
#530 - Ice Age: Continental Drift (Disney+)

Did not expect Drake and Nicki Minaj in this cast. Outside of the Granny character, this was a low point for the series to this point. [**]

56. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
I’d say that of the five Indy movies, this sits right in the middle. The story is okay and the action sequences are as silly as we have come to expect from these movies. It was a fitting finale for the series.

173. Dead Presidents - Watched this on Showtime On-Demand. Very earlier this year, I had watched a video from this YouTube channel called Axiom Amnesia, and though I had seen this movie before, I liked how the two people broke down various elements of the story and the characters of this film. Plus, I was in the mood to watch this recently, though it had been quite some time since I had last watched it.
As far as films from The Hughes Brothers go, I have mostly seen this one and "Menace II Society." I remember they did a documentary called "American Pimp," and they also did that 2001 film adaptation of Alan Moore's "From Hell," which I may check out in the future, both the film and the graphic novel. I know the two brothers, Allen and Albert, had each done separate projects, but that's not important right now.
I recall seeing TV spots for this as a child and seeing how the promotion focused mainly on the heist that goes down, but really, the story itself focuses on Larenz Tate's character as he goes from his time in the Vietnam War to afterwards and struggling to make ends meet and dealing with some problems. I have always liked how the story was told mainly from his point-of-view while also bringing in some supporting characters who are essential to some plot points. Also, the soundtrack was awesome given the era this film was set in.
There were some issues, though, but I am not sure if a certain bit at the end was because of the writing. There is a side of me that believes that the screenwriter incorporated an element to show how off-base a character had gone, but it was a minor nitpick. Also, I have to say that with the use of blood squibs, whether it was in the war scenes or the heist scene, some of the violence was hard to watch even now.

131. Catwoman: Hunted (2022) 132. Justice League: Warworld (2023)So, for what is probably my final movie of 2023, I really wanted to watch something different and fun. But going through the various streaming services that I currently subscribe to, nothing really stuck out. So I figured I'd do another DC animated movie. For those not familiar, a Wild West Wonder Woman, a Sword and Sorcery Batman and a 1950's government agent Superman team up to battle Mongul onboard his space ship, Warworld. You'd think with a plot like that this would be a really fun movie, but everything about this story is just so miserable and depressing and everybody is just so unlikable that it's practically impossible to get any enjoyment out of any of it. The people at DC really need to take a couple of Zoloft and stop making movies like this.

131. Catwoman: Hunted (2022) 132. Justice League: Warworld (2023) 133. Yor, the Hunter from the Future (1983)I really did not want to end the year on such a downer as Warworld, so after stumbling across this I figured it would give me some mindless fun. And it mostly did. This is a stupid and ridiculous movie, but an enjoyable one. It's really struggling to fill its ninety minute run time though and comes off as really tedious at times.
