Simpson Tide was the 19th episode of the Ninth season, generally considered the last classic season. I remember loving it when I was younger. But now watching it it seems more like an episode of Family Guy. Homer gets a new job for one episode, his friends join him for some reason. Lots of overly wacky gags like penguins manning the SS Antarctica and "Must crush capitalism".
So as the thread title asks is this episode a classic or the beginning of the end of the classic Simpsons run?

That episode is classic. Simpson had long since changed from being a grounded sitcom that happened to be animated to being a show that tried to embrace the wackiness of being animated while still keeping one foot (or at least a toe or two) on the ground.

It definitely had hints of what was to come but the humor felt the same as the rest of the classic era. I say it's a classic

Wouldn't the blame fall on Family Guy for taking something fun and running it into the ground after the fact? Like, you might still enjoy "Simpson Tide" if Family Guy didn't show up and do what it did?

But continuing to watch after season 9 every other episode seems to have Homer with a new job and becoming more brain damaged or jerkass. So even without Family Guy the Simpsons was going this way and I dont care for it. Family Guy just did the same thing but more obnoxiously, IMO.

Homer was changing jobs all the way back in Season 2.

I loved Simpson Tide. If anything, I think it was one of the best episodes of Season 9.

I think it's half and half. The story and scenario is pretty terrible, IMO, but the humor carries the episode. Later episodes had the bad scenario but didn't have the humor to carry them.

Return of the Soviet Union is still one of my favorite jokes in the show. "The Soviet Union? I thought you guys broke up?" "Yes... that's what we wanted you to think! AHAHAHAHAHAHAH!"

I mean it shows what the Al Jean era was gonna be season 13 and on. Little f***s given about the story and hopefully the jokes are good but the jokes slowly stopped being good and you wondered how much money Al Jean actually needed and how dead inside he was.

This episode seemed to be the earliest to start a trend I really began hating during this era of the Simpsons: plots switching on a dime midway and really weird abrupt endings.
Like said earlier the jokes save this episode, but it's not one of my favorites if we're being honest.
