Who are some SNL cast members who, even though they may have still been good on the show, were on for way too long. Kevin Nealon comes to mind, by the end he did nothing but play random characters who just existed as straight-men to the wackiness on screen. He didnt even do Weekend Update anymore. David Spade's final season in 95-96 is also another less than notable thing, Spade in America had some funny stuff but was just a way to have some connection to the early 90s cast (though by this time we had Tim Meadows who debuted around the same time and was just now starting to come into his own). And of course, the obligatory mention of Kenan Thompson.

Darrell Hammond is someone who likely did, but it's hard to really think of what else to do with the guy.

Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon for the same reason: They were too big for the show, but stuck around 2-3 years too many to the detriment of the rest of the cast, specifically the female members

Not Keenan. He can stay as long as he wants.

I mean, she's not hurting for work, but I don't think she became the Hollywood mega-star comedienne that people were expecting from her 5-10 years ago.

As you said, she's had a good career, but she was "supposed" to be a huge star and she never got there. The other aspect to her sticking around in 2016 is that she/the show figured her to have a certain political role locked up for several years, and when that didn't go as expected it was a case of "well...f***. Now what?"

I wondered at the time if Will Ferrell didn’t linger too long. His career is fine, of course. He’s had some big hits (Elf, Megamind, Daddy’s Home all had large profit margins) and a series of minor hits, many that became cult classics that made them feel like bigger hits. That’s a solid career, but I thought he’d have been bigger.

Yeah, Kate stuck around longer than she needed to and that's likely because she kept appearing in bomb after bomb. Her big girl's vacation film was released at the same time as one with an all-black female cast that was 100x better (and is getting a sequel). Ghostbusters and other vehicles didn't take off either. She's definitely funny, but she sucks at picking scripts or needs to fire her agent.

I always get mad about that movie, because they accidentally stumbled onto a fantastic plot about mid-way through the movie, and just completely ignored it. The plot thread of "Of course the US government knows about ghosts, and it's actively suppressing that knowledge" is a WAY more interesting plot than anything else in that movie.

Kenan will be in his 70s with his kids and grandkids on SNL. As long as he appears with Kel as Mavis and Clavis in real time, I can support that.

And she and Chris Hemsworth were the 2 best things about that movie. Completely agree. If they ever make a sequel to Afterlife then I hope they somehow bring her character into it. But I'm also hoping they somehow bring Kylie into the movies as well and that seems just as unlikely.

I was going to say that she had a small, sort of serious role in something I had seen recently but couldn't remember what it was. This was it. Thanks.

Kenan is so good on SNL. Even when it's bad, he's usually a bright spot.

The OP mentioned Spade, and I have to agree. Watching anything from his last season there you could just see that he would have rather been anywhere else.
I'd also add Nealon. He stuck around for a year after he was replaced from Update and he stuck out like a sore thumb at that point

I disagree with Kenan. I think he's good at sketch comedy, but I don't think he'd be all that good in a sitcom or movie. He's limited, which we all know. But he found his niche at All That and SNL. He seems like a likable guy and he's doing what he's suited to, on a stage that many dream of. Just because others move on doesn't mean he's also outgrown it. He's exactly where he should be.
