McKinnon did Joe vs Carol mini series that was about 2 years after anyone cared about Tiger King.
From what I remember, Spade stayed another year as a favor to Lorne Michael's since this was going to be a rebuilding year with just a few returning cast members like Norm, Tim Meadows, Mark McKinney and Molly Shannon.

And then Norm(probably the strongest of that crop, because Shannon hadn't come into her own yet) got fired because the one NBC exec was a pissbaby about OJ right?

Outside of the original cast, most people stay too long, I think. It should be like Doctor Who, where you stay for 3-5 years, then move on to something else. Dana Carvey was there 7 years, Phil Hartman was there for 8, Kevin Nealon for 9. It makes the show stagnant when the same guys are hanging around. Darrell Hammond is the most obvious and most egregious case of this, though. By 2004, he was barely appearing in group sketches and I was shocked he stayed four more years, as he was clearly phoning it in by that stage.

Norm got fired two years after the trial. Ohlmeyer's claim was that people were tuning out during Update, because Norm and Jim Downey (who had been demoted from head writer to writing only Update) were "not funny". I wouldn't doubt if the OJ stuff was a contributing factor, however, as he and Don were good friends.

I'm not even the biggest fan of Norm's tenure (lot of gems, but also some really despicable shit like the Brandon Teena "joke"), but I did love his line on hosting, that he was told he wasn't funny when fired. He said he hadn't gotten any funnier, so clearly, this meant SNL's standards had slipped and the show must be less funny to invite him back to host.

LOL When it was first announced the idea of doing a series about Tiger King didn't seem an insane idea at all. By the time it came out, though, nobody gave a shit anymore.

Meadows is interesting. He started out in 1991, but was rarely given anything to do. By 1995 he started breaking out (I love the John John Mackey sketch), but even then it took time. I dont think he even debuted the Ladies Man character until 97-98.

Forgot about that one, great sketch that was usually relegated to the last half-hour of the show.

I just don't understand a scripted series after the documentary already came out. We've already seen the real thing. Maybe it's just me.

Honestly I kinda felt the same about the Disaster Artist movie. The best scenes in the movie were just A-listers reproducing the same scenes from the original movie that I could already watch for free
