I don’t like Riho - don’t think she should be abused however. That being said, every public personality constantly gets hated on (not saying it’s okay, but it does happen) so it’s not just specific to her and other Japanese women is it? Cornette and his fanbase have made Riho a target more so than other women even in AEW, to the point the attacks have made her delete her socials So I would have to say that while it's not specific, everyone does get some margin of hate, Riho's hate was perpetuated and ramped up via Cornette never letting go about her and adjacently Kenny Omega, which then made it the mission of his flunkies to harass her on a daily basis This has been going on for months if you listen to Omega's interviews as well. Riho had to ask him why people were being so rude to her online and at live shows. These people are scumbags and it's disturbing the lengths they'll go, and Cornette doesn't do a damn thing to stop them and won't, he doesn't care. And racism against Asians is way way too accepted. The chants that Kairi got, the shit that Iyo's gotten, Cornette calling Joshis schoolgirls, Stephen A Smith saying Ohtani can't be the face of baseball because he needs an interpreter. That's not being said unless people are comfortable with it, this shit needs to stop.

Remember when Nakamura was feuding with Jinder Mahal and he cut an extremely racist promo about how Shinsuke's people all "rook the same" and that they dine on Dolphin? Even the WWE crowd chanted "That's too far" at him This shit was in 2017, not very long ago, and Nakamura was rewarded by... losing to the racist multiple times and never winning the world title. Shit's kinda f***ed when you think about it.

Jim Cornette has two major criticisms of Riho, and one of them isn't specific to her. He says that she's so small it isn't believable that she'd be able to hurt a gnat let alone another human being, and for that reason makes pro wrestling look bad any time she does anything. The non-specific one is that he rails against the schoolgirl fetishization that's so common in the Japanese women's wrestling scene. I completely disagree on the first. The problem with his take on the second is that he seems to think that someone cannot possibly be a fan of Joshi without being a pedo creep. Or maybe he doesn't think that but he likes using it for rant material. Either way, he manages to drown his own points in his vitriol. His fans, however, lack even the ability to process that bit of nuance. They also want to have loud vitriolic opinions just like Cornette, but they're not guys who spent decades perfecting the art of a good rant/promo, they're just loudmouth jackasses on the internet in an echo chamber. Yeah, even on the first part it's like, dude, watch the matches. Riho doesn't try to overpower anybody; she uses quickness, leverage, and leaps from the top to get the most out of her small frame against larger opponents. It's the main story of her matches! "Oh, but that wouldn't work in real life-" IT'S PRO WRESTLING, @#$%S SAKE, IRISH WHIPS AREN'T REAL. And yeah, on the other point I liken it to online personalities in other opinion/streaming/etc. spaces (say, sports or politics) who say edgy things; like, saying an edgy thing doesn't automatically make you a bad person, lots of people have verbal habits or whatever that they fall into, and we can argue all day about how significant word choice is in any given situation. But when you're a person whose whole bit online is "listen to me for my opinions", it can't come as much of a surprise when a handful of your listeners, even just a vocal minority, decide to emulate your style/verbiage/whatever, and if you've gone on rants about other people you similarly can't be surprised if said portion of your fanbase decides to dogpile the target of your ire while emulating you. This only amplifies when part of the allure you have to some of your fans is getting into shitty racial stereotyping; you're going to attract some of the dregs of the internet with bullshit like that, and, shock of shocks! Those dregs will probably be awful to other people! There are times when online content creators can't be held accountable for some of their fans being assholes, but there are times when you can draw a pretty friggin' obvious straight line between the creator and the way said fans are acting.

That's Cornette in a nutshell. A lot of the time he has a point, it isn't always a point I agree with, but underneath the ranting and his co-hosts sniggering, there is usually a sensible point there. It's just so surrounded by ranting, inappropriate baiting and potentially some of his own prejudices, that he loses the point to the noise.

Is there any actual evidence that would suggest that is was Cornette fans that caused her to delete her Twitter? Or is this just Tennis Racket Man Bad It just feels like an insane, weird hair splitting. Cornette and his goons have been saying ugly stuff about Riho since 2019 and even if the straw that broke the camel's back isn't precisely one singular comment about a co-worker grooming her for the past decade to be his fetish object wife, we're still talking about people who have been harassing this person since, again, 2019. I have no idea how you can unironically, actually put out "Tennis Racket Man Bad" in this situation given all of that. Really co-opting the language of "You just don't like the stuff this guy ever does and want reasons to hate him" about abuse he's actually done because maybe it wasnt' that heap of abuse that made her close up shop but the other abuse she was receiving simultaneously, thereby I guess f***ing. Absolving him of blame? For that abuse. Bad post.

Also, just to add...has Jim actually said anything about how crazy his fans are about this stuff? Because it seems like every time I hear about him, he's a fan of fanning the flames then telling his fanbase to stop.
And even if he has with Riho, he reguarly says Aubrey's a horse, so much so the graphic designer draws her as one. This isn't the first case of this sort of shit even if Riho's has much more serious historical context to it.

I'll never understand people who hate watching things. Seems like that's what cornette does and makes a load of money doing it. It baffles me. And why attack anyone like this. Like their wrestling or not at the end of the day they're all human beings. It's how he makes a living. If he gets paid for it, I totally get it. Now, regular people that "hate watch" the opposing political shows just for the ability to go on Twitter and "participate" fascinate me. I know that's straddling the line so I will stop there.

I realize that it's how he made his living and that guys have literally died in ring for the craft and all that, but Jim (and his fans) needs to take a biiiiiig step back and realize just how completely stupid and insane they sound by being so aggressive and defensive all at the same time over f***ing playfighting with some soap opera level acting thrown in.
Do I love wrestling? Of course, I wouldn't be on this board if I didn't. But if you feel the need to chickenhawk a poor woman on Twitter over not fitting your playfighting standards... maybe you should go touch some grass and get a grip on reality.

Brian and him opened an official one with rules. One of them asking to not harass people. I didn't look into it and he followed up on the topic of Facebook, so I don't know how honest of an attempt it is to tame the extreme voices within his fandom. When you actually have to tame your fans, you should know there is a big problem anyway.

Joshis (actually all female wrestlers and wrestling personalities) get the trio of sexism, racism and lookshaming from their haters. Men mostly just get "you suck and can't wrestle." It's different.

Jim Cornette these days is a shock jock in the same vein as Howard Stern, Bubba the Love Sponge, Don Imus, etc... His whole schtick is to express extremely hateful and vitriolic opinions to rile up his fanbase (which he knows full well are people who are prone to cyberbullying, harassment, and potentially worse) and then going all shocked pikachu face when those people cyberbully, harass, and worse. It's nothing but lipservice when he continues to happily profit off of the bigotry. I was a pretty big fan of Cornette back in the day, too. I loathe seeing what he has allowed himself to turn into in the name of the almighty dollar.

I'm very glad this happened but to show how shitty some people are - Meltzer mentioned some people tried to use this to send more hateful messages to Riho which just shows how deranged those people are.

And beyond that, imagine being a foreigner in another country, not fluent in the local language, and you don't do anything to warrant people throwing hate at you...yet there it is, nonetheless. Not that there's really anything one could do to warrant that kind of abuse from others, but Riho doesn't really speak on TV, she hasn't said anything hurtful to others, hasn't said or done anything untoward on social media, hasn't committed any acts that warrant personal criticism, she's basically focused on being a professional and performing to the best of her abilities, yet still has to deal with people saying all that awful shit about her, starting when she was in her early 20s, barely old enough to be out of college? Jesus, that'd be a complete mindscrew for anybody, but now pile on being someone who's in an unfamiliar culture and who gets hit with racism and misogyny alongside all that, it's a lot.

If it's a Facebook group then you have to have no harassment as part of the rules otherwise it'll get the Zuckerberg ban hammer. If he calls it out on his podcast I'll believe he means it. I said it in another thread and I'll say it here as well. I don't care if 99% of what Cornette says is the most insightful and intelligent wrestling analysis in the world. As soon as he starts on his schoolgirl and twinkletoes nonsense, it cancels all of that out. Anyone willing to overlook Cornette's racism just for wrestling analysis needs to take a long, hard look at themselves.

Also, there's a difference between "Don't harass people right now in this group you're in that we moderate" and "Don't harass people I don't like who aren't here somewhere else where I'm not 'responsible' for it". Cornette does not reign in his fanbase and makes no effort to tell people to cool it.
