What were some times a company accidentally created their own competitors?

WWE leaving a variety of wrestling niches unfulfilled led to the indie wrestling boom which in turn led to AEW.

The Walt Disney company does not exist as we know it today without Universal thinking they were pulling a fast one and snatching the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and most of Walt's animators.
This creates more ripples in which former Disney animators Hugh Harman and Rudy Ising, after losing their jobs at Universal, get picked up by Leon Schlesinger to begin work on the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of shorts.

WOTC mangling the 4th edition of D&D led directly to the existence of Pathfinder.
WOTC mangling the Open Gaming License led to a lot of new people trying Pathfinder.

I know it's historical and their homes are right across a park... but as an American Everton supporter... they aren't even in the same stratosphere. I'm still convinced Everton is going open their new stadium in The Championship.

For a brief while Audi and Bentley were the two biggest competitors at Le Mans, despite both being owned by the same parent company (VW Group)

Didn't a Blizzard game being modded lead to League of Legends?

Atari screwing over its programmers and developers and treating them like garbage led to the creation of the first third party publisher/developer. Ironically, that company was Activision.

WOTC mangling the 4th edition of D&D led directly to the existence of Pathfinder. WOTC mangling the Open Gaming License led to a lot of new people trying Pathfinder. To be fair Pathfinder was in the works as soon as 4th edition was announced. Even if it had been a massive success Pathfinder would have existed. Now the fact that 4th sucked (IMO) allowed Pathfinder to thrive. And is now booming because of what happened with your second point.

Atari backing out of a deal to distribute the NES in America, forcing Nintendo to go it alone and dominating the video game market for the next decade.
Atari then repeated the blunder by playing hardball at the negotiating table with Sega, who were looking for a North American manufacturer and distributor for the Genesis. Sega walked away from the table and the rest is history.

"Competition" might be a strong word in 2023, but Image Comics burst onto the scene as the new hotness in the 90s largely as a response to how the majors (particularly Marvel Comics) were treating their creators.

Whatever people think of the system itself, it was extremely unpopular compared to 3.X before and 5E afterwards. WOTC botched everything 4E so badly because of greed. The stupid thing is they almost did the same exact thing AGAIN recently with the OGL. I swear these corpos have collective memories of an amnesiac.

Yeah all I an saying is that Pathfinder didnt come around because they botched 4th edition. Pathfinder was being worked on as soon as 4th was announced. Even if 4th had been a hit Pathfinder as a continuation of 3.5 would have still happened.
