Do they have any idea how lucky they are that Cody was still just as over, if not more, after he didn’t win last year? Cody maintained a top guy presence and still had all the momentum in the world. There was no guarantee that would happen.
And they wasted it.

I don’t understand the notion that Cody winning at EC somehow salvages the storyline. The whole point was finally defeating the final boss Roman on the biggest stage of them all. This is unsalvageable and is typical WWE nonsense of failing to see the forest through the trees and pissing away an entire year of storyline just to generate some social media buzz. I’ll preface this by saying that maybe we should just let it all play out, etc., but upon first blush this really appears to be one of those Vince-esque decisions to book for the most casual of fans or, worse, the potential fan who might tune in to see a movie star and not for the people who actually like, watch and pay for your product. The problem is that the people you’re booking for here might not even exist. |

Why not just make it a triple threat?
Cody wins, pinning the Rock. Reigns is pissed off that Rock cost him the title and so challenges Rock at the next major PPV. Cody gets his belt, we still get Reigns vs Rock with a bit of an added grudge, WWE can do a Champion vs Champion match vs Seth if they want AND they can do the Reigns vs Cody rematch further down the line.

Meltzer says on the F4W board that Cody facing Roman was still the plan through the Rollins promo on Raw. And then it wasn’t. I can buy that, since it sure seems stupid to win the Rumble and then point to Roman if that wasn’t the plan.
