What a weird career. Mayor of Cincinnati, gets caught writing a personal check to a hooker, has a serious talk show (believe it or not), then figures out to pander to the lowest common denominator, leading to just flat out faking fights and guests.

And was so influential in the history of pro wrestling, even inadvertently, he goes onto host a show about the stuff they basically plagerised from him on the biggest company’s streaming service. It’d be like if George Lucas hosted a show about Akira Toriyama’s manga history.

Also if true, the source isn't the most reliable,Jamie Dundee and Madman Pondo were in charge of getting the guests for springer for a bit.
Back in 96 or 97 a friend from the army appeared on Rowanda. The topic was "my Parents hate my black boyfriend." Beth, not her name, had not only never met the "boyfriend" until the day of taping. But also Beth was happily married to someone at the time.
Learned from her that one agency booked most of the guests for every daytime talk show besides Oprah.

And he started as a legit talk show host, he just finally leaned in to the sensationalism of it. He was ahead of the reality tv curve.

And in wrestling, too. Not only appearing as a guest host on Raw, but had his own show in the early days of the WWE Network. His talk show’s turn to trashy, shock value content arguably had a lot of influence over wrestling in the late 90s, especially with the Attitude Era.

Honestly, he made the right choice (for him, not for society), that show would have never lasted as it was.

Man, some of my fondest memories from 2007-2009 are of watching Jerry Springer and the Steve Wilkos Show at work with my former boss, who was also my best friend's mom, while we howled with laughter at the ridiculousness of it all.
She died of cancer a couple years ago. I miss her terribly, but Jerry Springer always makes me smile because of that.
Rest in peace, Mr. Springer. And thank you for providing the background of some great memories.

At the peak of his show he became the first person to beat Oprah in the May sweeps ratings in over a decade. That’s how big that was.

He has a complicated legacy and I don't know quite how to navigate it or feel about it at the moment. In my feeds, half of my trans friends point to his show as the reason they were scared to come out and cited him as being a major (if unintentional) proponent of trans panic. The other half of my trans friends cite his show as the first time they ever learned about trans people existing and it was the first step towards realizing who they were, and how his show really brought at least the idea of trans people into a lot of spaces it otherwise wouldn't be.
I don't have the answers and I know few people and legacies are truly all-good or all-bad, but as a cis man this one just seems very particularly complex to unpack.

Rest In Peace. 1998, WWF Attitude Era, South Park & Jerry Springer were all amazing to a teenager boy.

He was a complicated man, he genuinely wanted to do good at one point but his good intent got consumed by his enjoyment of his rising fame.

Yeah, I found myself thinking - for completely different reasons - what I think of his legacy and influence. His programme kind of brought confrontational talk TV to the mainstream, and while I don't believe that much if any of what happened on Jerry Springer was actually real, he kind of helped lay the foundations for a lot of really nasty TV that was essentially bear baiting on television, and that helped perpetuate some really dodgy stereotypes about race, gender, sexuality, social standing, all sorts of things. But at the same time, as I said, I view - and I could be wrong about this - Springer's show itself as little more than a tacky daytime pantomime rather than something with real people, and I'm not sure how much responsibility he has for that format being taken and done with real people.
So yeah, it's a difficult one.

Used to watch Jerry Spring over my lunch break in the before time, in the long long ago. It was essentially background noise while I ate my ham sandwich and pondered my existence until I'd hear the shit talking and yelling. I never paid to much attention to what the actual content was outside of the wacky antics and fights.
