So I'm watching Raw, Nitro, PPVs, and ECW in chronological order and I'm up to July 1997 which is when I really started watching both shows and changing back and forth between Raw and Nitro every Monday night.
One of my favorite storylines at the time was Foley debuting the Dude Love character.
I have a question though. Do you think they planned on Foley to become Dude Love a couple months earlier when they turned him Babyface by having him do the really good sit-down interviews with Jim Ross?
I mean was the plan to always turn him into Dude Love or did they just think of it when Shawn and Bret got into a fight backstage and they had to come up with a new tag partner for Austin?

I dont think it was a long term plan for Dude Love to be a thing, might have been something vince bounced about in his head as a possibility if Foley needed a character refresh at some point.
there may have been Dude Love signs in the crowd shortly after the interviews (I honestly dont remember) which may have helped push vince's brain into thinking of using the character.

That's pretty much what happened. After seeing signs for a few weeks, Vince called Foley and threw the idea of him being Dude Love "going forward", but shortly thereafter pivoted to the alter egos thing where Mick would go back and forth depending on what story they were telling

According to Foley's first book, he got a call from Vince the week before the show where Dude debuted, asking him if he wanted to be Dude Love. Foley asked if it was for the next PPV, and Vince said "from now on".
The timeline is that the sit-down interview aired in May, between Cold Day in Hell and King of the Ring, and set up Mankind's face turn. The night after King of the Ring is where Austin and Bret had their locker room fight and Shawn walked out. Either that same night or the following week, I'm not sure, Mankind started campaigning to be Austin's partner, which the crowd was absolutely sold on. The week before Austin's match against Owen and Davey, Austin beat Mankind up and said he wanted nothing to do with him, leading to an expected handicap match, but then Foley came out as Dude the next week and helped Austin win the titles.
So, my guess is that Vince had the idea during the tournament to decide who would face Austin to crown new Champions and finally decided to pull the trigger when they prepared for the title match.

Vince saw the signs and the home video and basically pulled the "I got an idea...". Dude Love was then "born". edit: should've read the entire thread. LOL
