In Donkey Kong 64, one of the early concepts and ideas was that DK was going to use a realistic shotgun as a weapon that would fire actual Bullets, which can be seen here in an early version of The DK Rap.
Apparently Shigeru Miyamoto took one look and was disgusted when he saw it that he grabbed a pen and paper and came up with The Coconut Gun in minutes and told them to use that.

I didn't have Donkey Kong with a shotgun on my bingo card for 2023.
Now I kinda wanna see a game where Donkey Kong has a shotgun.

I like that it seems that only DK was getting a real gun. So the others would still have had goofy food-shooting guns but DK goes full Arn Anderson.

Diddy also had double Glocks and Chunky had a regular bazooka. I don't think Tiny or Lanky's weapons were altered too much, but they were pretty standard in the final product. I wouldn't be surprised if the grenades were changed to oranges as well. |

It's my understanding that he wasn't, like, furious or anything, but felt that it was tonally inappropriate, which, it frankly kind of was. The coconut gun, etc, do fit with the barrels and the like considerably more.
