I bet this is what the CEO of Blockbuster said back in like 2004. Blockbuster lost because of convenience. As soon as someone could click there remote and rent a movie on demand for $5, even without streaming services, their business model was in trouble. I’ve walked into a Blockbuster and seen the movie I wanted was rented, haven’t encountered that issue online Blockbuster also saw streaming on the horizon, but they had 5000+ physical locations that they couldn't get rid of. That's a lot of real estate and materials to liquidate. That contributed to their downfall as much as anything.

Weren’t the also offered an opportunity to buy Netflix right before it exploded and laughed them out of the room? EDIT: Might have even had 2 opportunities, once during the mailing days in the late 90’s early 2000’s and once again right before the streaming service took off

Netflix is the only streaming service I'm subscribed to so works out for me. I wouldn't have been signing up for another one just for wrestling. I'd just have kept up to date with Raw via Youtube clips. In fact, it's probably too early to think about this but will they still upload Raw segments to Youtube almost immediately after the show like they've always down or will Netlfix put a stop to that and want you to have to watch on Netflix, whether live or afterwards?
Whatever they're paying Nick Khan it's not enough with some of the deals they've signed since he came in. $5B for a show that hasn't even been the top show for the past 5 years is insane. I wouldn't be shocked if he eventually gets picked up for some "more prestigious" exec role in TV/Hollywood.

Netflix still does a lot of content on YouTube where they put out stuff that happens to build buzz for content, like whole scenes or people talking about said scenes, so if they do it for stuff like Wednesday and One Piece, probably will let WWE do it here.

I can't help but think of the awkwardness of WWE on Netflix on Monday nights directing people to watch the PLEs on Peacock on Saturday nights, which will then in turn direct people to watch Raw again on Monday night on Netflix to see what happened after the PLEs on Peacock on Saturday night.

Yeah I can't say I'm thrilled. I haven't had an account in years and not willing to just buy in again for WWE.
Its a shame but I'll follow on Smackdown, NXT and YouTube. Not a major loss though because Raw hasn't been an easy watch for me between time, work, and just concentration in years. I dozed off an hour into last night from being up since 4:30am for work.
Good for WWE though, they are understanding how this game is played and its gonna make money. The long term? Who knows, the industry is radically different looking than 5 years ago and here we thought the Fox deal was major, these three are next level, and we are a far cry from the days of Spike TV.

Just realized, the Smackdown deal also potentially includes specials airing on NBC across the year. Really curious if those will be included in the international streaming or will be Peacock exclusives.

Will say, the thing that struck down the Fox deal was basically being sold a bill of goods and not getting what they were promised. The difference is that USA knows what WWE content gives them, CW’s looking for anything and Netflix probably knows that people will either watch WWE live or on demand and if some of the Network/PLE content comes over first day internationally, there’s a reason for people to keep using it.

Similar boat. Which sucks. I was watching RAW through Vince’s dark days and the three hour shit, but as of late , even w/o being glued to it, it’s been my favorite wrestling show above dynamite and smackdown. Oh well. 5 billion a hell of a deal. There is something alien to me about Monday night raw on streaming. I’m old. It’s cold. Everything’s different and I don’t like it.

Pretty much this, I had been saying for a few years (and got shot down by some for it) that there had clearly been issues in the WWE/Fox relationship shortly after Smackdown started... ironically a big part of that was not getting NXT for FS1. In hindsight, even if nobody really said it outloud, reading articles and the stuff that did come out made it seem like Fox was ready to be done with WWE fairly early in the deal

And that’s before not getting any of the 4m viewers a week they wanted. EDIT: The deal, mind you, that took some of the luster off the fact they went out of their way to get CM Punk to their panel show, something that would have been matched with NXT, and then being ignored when you basically told the company they’d pay for CM Punk to wrestle…yeah, man, WWE made out like bandits with that.

The lack of commercials, if that’s the case, will be interesting to adjust to. I stand up to leave the room on instinct when there’s a dive in a match on Raw. You already know Raw will be about to roll on before the ads start.

Interesting, Fightful is saying that, right now, nothing’s been decided about where Raw will air from October to January. If USA’s planning to get the NBA rights, it could have Mondays at the end of October booked for potential time slots since that’s when the season starts.

They'll lose some viewers not everyone has Netflix or is gonna pay 20 bucks a month to watch WWE, especially kids.
I think the real question here, is will they use all the TV money bumps to pay talent or will they use it to pump their stock prices..

They have too many decent board of directors to substantially pay!

Which literally means getting the most while paying the least, stock buybacks, paying the board assinine amounts of money to not do anything. Caring more about shareholder value than anything else... Companies like this could give 2 f***s about talent if they think the WWE machine can run with guys making half the money they'll do it that way to share more profit.

This is a different discussion entirely but just want to say, agree completely with all of that. It’s a lot of the reason why the games industry is where it is and the only people paying are the developers just following mandates.

This is a different discussion entirely but just want to say, agree completely with all of that. It’s a lot of the reason why the games industry is where it is and the only people paying are the developers just following mandates. Like for example in the Okada thread someone said the WWE losing out on big FAs is getting old...they're losing out because they literally make take it or leave it offers without negotiation. They see themselves as a money making machine that isn't going to lower their profit margin to sign someone who in their eyes they "don't need". You have 1 guy who is essentially a mega rich super fan that runs a private company vs a conglomerate that cares about it's stock price, profit margin, shareholder value etc.
