Washington wins the battle of bad teams gunning for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. Detroit, Philly, and Pittsburgh are officially out.
They get the Rangers in the first round.

Playoffs!
(I just hope the Bruins can win a series.)
(And then 3 more.)

The fact that the league left the door open to almost immediately go back to Phoenix is the most blatant incompetence in all of sport. They've been unsellable in the desert for the last 15 years, bouncing around, being a laughingstock, and the second they move the team Bettman includes a way to undo the thing that is wildly overdue. Also, the NHL opening things up to 33 (and therefore inevitably 34) teams just kinda points to NHL loving the Subway franchise yourself into profit business plan. The most money they make is in expansion, but when does it stop being a good thing? I'd say the league size is perfect right now. NHL owners would say keep going until the checks stop clearing. League is big enough. Whose even left south of the border who even has a market for hockey? League should stop expanding and focus it's efforts on keeping teams solvent and moving them to places they will be if not. Honestly though, with what we do know about Menuelo and the state of Arizona seemingly doing everything in its power to make sure no hockey team will have a home there, I doubt the coyotes actually come back.

They've been trying for Houston and KC for Arizona. Probably won't stop. I doubt Arizona is coming back, but the fact they even left it an option shows it's time to take away grandpa's car keys so to speak.

Atlanta. They’re determined to have a team in Atlanta. It’s the biggest media market they aren’t in. They think if they can just capture a small % of the market, it’ll be a success, unlike the last two times a team failed there in short order.

Canada needs ANOTHER team from there when it inevitably fails again .

Canada needs ANOTHER team from there when it inevitably fails again . When Winnipeg moved from there it was only because Bettman couldn’t find a single human who wanted to own a team in Atlanta. His first move after the Thrashers left was to threaten Winnipeg that if they didn’t sell out every game, they’d look to move the team. Now, the old Winnipeg team plays in a barn most Major Junior teams in Canada would find unacceptable, it’s moving to SLC, with the promise of a new team before any paperwork is even drawn up, never mind the ink being dry. He doesn’t have the cart before the horse, the wheel hasn’t even been invented yet.

No 70th goal for Auston Matthews. He gets stopped at 69. A nice number, according to some.

The league is going to keep hammering on expansion until they have new clubs in Atlanta, Houston, and back in Phoenix, at minimum (would need a 4th to round the numbers out, obviously). Like it or not, those are big and, importantly, growing markets. More than that, they're banking on the new expansion rules leading to instantly competitive teams; the Coyotes likely didn't fail because "hockey won't work in the desert", but because the Coyotes were run like fresh shit, much like the Thrashers.
Would much, *much* rather see things like the resurrection of the Nordique and Whalers if expansion must occur, but I know that's never happening.

Never doubted Otter for one second. Nope, never. Don’t look at any of my previous posts in this thread.
Watching that Coyotes broadcast was rough last night. You really had to feel for the fans, broadcasters, staff and others who are gonna feel the consequences of that ownership's incompetence. Meruelo is getting a billion to f*** off and they’re losing their team and, in some cases, their jobs.

Milwaukee makes sense. Hartford could get a new Whalers franchise, but the Bruins might lay down territorial rights. Cincinnati could work, but their arena is pretty old, and the city is notoriously tight-fisted when it comes to public spending on sports.

I'll give it a whirl:
Rangers in 5 over Caps Canes in 6 over Isles
Leafs in 7 over Bruins (has to happen eventually, right?!) Panthers in 6 over Lightning
Stars in 7 over Knights Jets in 7 over Avalanche
Canucks in 6 over Preds...though I'm tempted to say it goes the other way around. Tough one. Oilers in 5 over Kings

Second year in a row that Mark Stone is conveniently back on track for the playoffs after being injured before the deadline 🤧 8:30 start time for a home game in the playoffs is interesting. Bettman stacking the odds in the favor of his Vegas pet project. Kidding, of course. Or am I? Vegas is a team I hoped to avoid in the playoffs, those regular season games didn’t go so well! This Stars team has been on fire to close out the season though, so here’s hoping that translates into the playoffs. I got faith in them, let’s get this shit.

Eventually the NHL will change that rule but until then I'm all for Vegas abusing the loophole. Now may this series be good, clean, devoid of ref interference and preferably end with Vegas advancing. Amen.
