I never heard of Rempe before, but I saw most of the game last night and that guy smelled like Matt Cooke. Real obvious elbowing to the head and then chirps the bench on his way out. Total AHL dirtbag. Rookie whose schtick has basically become “tall guy who fights a lot.” Spent a good chunk of his 10 games for the Rangers in the penalty box. Some say bad for the sport, some say can be good. Depends on what you think of the fighting I suppose. Fighting is cool. I wish there was a little more of it tbh. The NHL has overcorrected and now it's mostly two guys wrestling on skates after a hit that wasn't even that bad every 5 games. Elbowing guys in the head, getting booted from the game, and then acting like you did something is insane. It is very much not cool.

Welp this game went from “Finals preview? Sign me up!” to “Make it stop!” with the quickness.

There's absolutely still room for fighting in the sport, but I think there's too much talent in the game for there to be a roster space reserved for the old-school big lumbering goon who averages 50 penalty minutes for every 1 point scored. Fourth lines now are what third lines used to be - the guys who aren't as skilled as the top lines but still plenty capable of producing offensively. Hockey still self-polices itself without there being a need for guys like Matt Cooke, Georges Laraque, P.J. Stock, or Trevor Gillies taking up a roster spot. It's like how the NBA used to have enforcers routinely squaring up and throwing haymakers in the 1970s, but as soon as Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan showed up and the talent pool got deeper, the on-court goons went the way of the dodo. Sure, there were still tough guys like Dennis Rodman, Bill Laimbeer, or Charles Oakley, but they had to produce on the floor to earn their minutes, not just be glorified street fighters.

So how we feeling about the moves made by your teams at the trade deadline? Not a fan of losing Guentzel, but I totally understand it as a hockey move. Pens don’t have the cap space to re-sign him for what he’ll get in free agency. So, trade him now for bodies and picks or let him walk at the end of an abysmal season and get nothing in return. It’s believed now that the Pens are tanking the season to try and win the draft lottery for no reason other than to piss Philly off

That's what I mean. Guys like Lowry can still fight while being useful players, but guys making really bad hits don't answer the bell or have no one really looking to. Kronwall or Trouba can make an over the line hit and just skate away. Max Domi can pull his shit and people don't really put him in his place. I'm not asking for a return to lines of enforcers; I already implied Cooke an AHL dirtbag. You'd see skilled captains take up for guys or in heated rivalries. Sidney Crosby has fought a number of times. LeCavalier fought Iginla and despite Iginla being a solid fighter, both of those guys were very skilled, important players on their team. I've never seen McDavid throw a punch. Not that he has to, but even guys in his position have had reason to. It seems like they rely too much these days on the league office to police things, and the league office has always been maddeningly inconsistent and incompetent. On-ice justice has its own issues, but there does seem to be more accountability. I'm not saying turn the clocks back 30 years, I'm saying like 5-10% more fighting than there is now and mostly when warranted.

Jeers: Avs retake the Central Division
Cheers: they got there thanks to the Canucks blowing a 3-0 lead, the exact same lead Dallas blew against the Panthers the other night. Since the hockey media largely ignores Dallas and the Canucks are a top ranked Canadian team they’re likely to hear more about it than we did. So haha point and laugh at the Canucks.

I can’t see this team going far in the playoffs. Defense has disappeared and Oettinger is back to looking lost out there. Shit’s ugly.
Maybe I’m being too doomerish but being a Cowboys fan has taught me to brace for postseason disappointment lol.

On-ice justice has its own issues, but there does seem to be more accountability. I'm not saying turn the clocks back 30 years, I'm saying like 5-10% more fighting than there is now and mostly when warranted. I get what you're saying: watching any Devils/Rangers game this year it's been very evident that the Rangers lean heavily on being physical against a smaller Devils team, which isn't a sin in and of itself, but now they've had multiple incidents of Devils getting injured and removed from those games on flagrant, dangerous hits that should be dealt in some logical, consistent way...but the league office is pretty awful at "consistency". It kind of demands that teams police the situation themselves, lest they lose players during the game because the worst the other team will face is a few minutes on the penalty kill, but it's clear the league doesn't really want them to do that, either. It's like in baseball; there are some pitchers over the years who've been way too comfortable pitching guys way up and inside, so sometimes the opposing team responds by plunking a good hitter on the other team. I'm not a fan of intentionally hitting someone, way too many things can go wrong and lead to injuries when guys are tossing 95+ and fastballs can rise toward someone's head, but a good pitcher can dial it down and send a "message pitch" without much in the way of risk, and ideally it just settles the issue between the players and gets the idea across "stop recklessly endangering our guys." But when the league clamps down on that to stop the players from self-policing, but then is very inconsistent on dealing with the issue on their own, they almost invite more of the initial bad behavior, since the instigating team/players feel they have relative impunity. I don't miss fights as much as I thought I would, but sometimes clubs need some leeway to deal with guys who make themselves into goon-ish problems on the ice.

Might just cost the Caps that playoff spot. Stupid move. To be the biggest shithead in a league with Domi and Marchand is really a challenge, yet Tom Wilson perseveres.

I am going to the Knicks / Nets game tomorrow, taking the LIRR, I wonder how many people going to the Islanders game I will bump into, and how will Knick fans and Islanders fans co exist on the train. How many of them are Knick / Islander fans like me? To go to MSG or UBS arena, every train has to go to Jamaica Queens station.

There's probably a lot of Knicks/Isles crossover because the Nets never really built up a super loyal home fanbase. Closest would've been when they were the NJ Nets, but given how eager the team seemed to be to leave the state, they never really gained a lot of loyalty here like the Devils did.

Absolute madhouse this Central Division. The big Dallas/Colorado/Winnipeg three way battle looks to be down to Dallas and Colorado trading the top spot back and forth while the struggling Jets have the surging Preds breathing down their necks.
This one’s going down to the wire it looks like.

Wild pulled their goalie in OT and wound up getting the win. According to the rules, if they allowed the empty net goal they would have forfeited the point that comes with making it to OT. Bold, but it paid off! Did it again with the opposite result! Vegas gets two points and Minnesota gets nada.
