I was watching 90 Day Fiance and they were discussing how viagra worked. One of the women extended her finger to imply an erection and they blurred it out. They were literally going into detail about how the pill works and not censoring anything. But if you make your finger straight, that's apparently too graphic.

More of these words need to be automatically replaced with "smurf."

“gun” & “knife” been censored for a long ass time now. Recall a bunch of songs from the late 90s, early aughts where they’d both be censored. Santeria by Sublime cut out a whole bunch of gun references cut out on mtv, leading to lines like "Daddy's got a new <blank>"

I want to say it's Love Island or maybe Temptation Island, maybe the Big D or Good Morning America ... anywho, it's one of those "horny people on island are given a lot of booze and told to get laid" trash TV shows that are so amazing to watch. Anywho, this chick and dude were full on missionary in bed with the covers pulled over and the camera was showing it clearly. You could hear the moaning and the "juicey sounds" too. About 2 minutes later the dude was talking about her boobs (the words totally uncensored) but he made the "honk honk" motion with both his hands... BLURRED
like wtf. Full on taking a chick to bonercity is fine. But mimicking a HONK HONK with no boobs is OVER THE LINE YA BASTARDS? Ya'll suck ass

Some TV stations when showing The Goonies, will bleep “Iranian” when the cop thinks Chunk is making a prank call and brings up the time he called about Iranian terrorists taking over all the Sizzlers.

If anyone was bizarrely censoring non swear words, I'd know. And I swear on my copy of Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles that that would surely be something I'd notice. There's actually some context to this: TMNT emerged on this side of the Atlantic at the same time as one of the numerous moral panics/performative pearl-clutchings by tabloid newspapers, this one about martial arts and "ninja" weapons and fearing that everyone in Britain under the age of 21 was armed with ninja death stars and knuckledusters, hence the re-titling.
Many of these same very moral tabloid newspapers also had topless teenage girls on page three, and today complain about how yOuNg PeOpLe are too soft.

They need to make visual censorship more appealing. Instead of just blurring something out, they should have a product placement where they show an image of an item that can be promoted. Instead of seeing naked boobs, they could show bottles of Nesquik. Instead of an ass, they could show a picture of a whopper. Instead someone getting stabbed in their face, they could show a bottle of Heinz ketchup over it.

On some platforms, people need to use unalive rather than dead or they get demonetised flagged by the bot algorithm.
Which makes a complete mockery of whichever subject theya re talking about. The only things that should be censored are slurs--n-word, f-word etc.

SiriusXM just played California Gurls by Katy Perry, and the following words were muted:
sex we freak buns a freak ass weenies
Keep in mind that this is SATELLITE RADIO, analogous to premium TV. The same service that airs Howard Stern and at one time aired Opie & Anthony and Playboy Radio. The only explanation I can think of is that the song aired on the limited-run Barbie Land channel (yes, a tie-in with the movie) so maybe it was a Mattel directive: remove any questionable words in case young girls might be listening.
Then again, I’m not so sure about that since the same channel played WAP by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, a song far more explicit than Katy’s is.

I was watching a YouTube video recently where the narrator mentioned a character seemingly (but not actually) "ending himself" and I didn't think anything of it, since it seemed like a perfectly normal synonym. But then he used the exact same phrasing again ten seconds later, which just made it sound awkward.

Fortunately the non-English speaking part of these side of the Atlantic didn't care as much, as the show was just called "Ninja Turtles" over here. "Teenage Mutant" however, now we can censor those pesky words!
