I loved Pee Wee's Playhouse as a kid. And he was a lot of fun as Andrew Lansing in Murphy Brown. Was even nominated for an Emmy in a guest role for it.
RIP Paul.

Man, that's a shot to the heart. Pee Wee Herman was a huge part of my childhood.
I remember one time my dad walked in while I was watching Pee Wee's Playhouse, and he asked "That's your hero? That's your role model?" and went into a tirade about how in his day heroes were "real men" like John Wayne, and I had to explain "Dad, he's not my hero; I just think he's funny."
And let's not forget one of the greatest moments in TV history:

I suddenly feel older. The loss of someone who was a staple of childhood in the 80s and paying a steep price for an error in judgment is a loss nonetheless. God bless you, Paul. See you later, Navigator and light speed to Endor.

This was literally the first thing I see on the off-topic forums. Saddened to hear the news. Admittedly, my first knowledge of watching Reubens was when Pee-Wee's Playhouse was airing reruns, on off all places, Cartoon Network's Adult Swim Block. And he voiced a character on the CN show Chowder, If I also recall.
R.I.P. to a legend.

Ricki Lake just shared this video message that Paul sent her on her birthday and it's touching, funny and so sad that he would be gone from us less than a year later. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CvXvgLdJr9H He was hilarious, thoughtful and kind until the end. RIPeeWee

As a kid, I watched so much Pee-Wee. Playhouse and Big Adventure, obviously. But I had VHSr recordings of his comedy special and Christmas special that I watched constantly. Paul Reubens was just a huge part of my childhood. RIP and say hello to Phil for us. .

I was a huge Pee Wee fan and lucky enough to get a photo op with him at Comic Con a few years ago. RIP to a huge part of my childhood

This is a pretty big gut punch.
Pee Wee's Playhouse was probably the first show I was ever obsessed with watching. My parents have even told me about a vacation we were on where we were leaving from it on a Saturday, but I insisted we couldn't go until I'd gotten to watch Pee Wee. The guy was as iconic to 5-6 year old me as the Ninja Turtles, Hulk Hogan, or any other late 80s mainstays. Like so many of those figures at the time, part of the allure as a kid was not fully grasping the difference between the actors and the characters, and how it made everything feel so real to a child. Plus, Pee Wee's whole approach to entertaining kids, focused on stimulating the imagination, on the importance of play, of being creative, and just having fun was something that spoke to a ton of us.
Fast forward to a handful of years ago, and they announce that Paul Reubens is going to have a run on Broadway as Pee Wee. I couldn't find anyone to go with me, but I couldn't care less, I was thrilled to go by myself. Dude shuffles out at the start, crowd goes nuts, and starts with "GOOD MORNING, BOYS AND GIRLS!", leads us in the pledge of allegiance, they open the curtains, and it was the friggin' Playhouse, right there on stage. Can't lie; I think a bunch of us in the crowd might've choked up for a second.
Well, it's been a mainstay in my household every holiday season, but I know I'll probably be playing this twice in late December in memory.
And, of course, one of the roles I spent my childhood not even realizing he was the voice behind:

Unquestionably Pee-wee is his big role most will know him for, but I also gotta give him his flowers for his amusing portrayals as The Spleen in Mystery Men and Bat-Mite in Batman: The Brave & The Bold. RIP to an amazing comedic actor. The arcade owner in Midnight Madness.

He was such an important figure in that era of stage and screen. A perfect blend of entertainment for kids and adults. Looking back, if I ever watched the shows or the movies, my parents wouldn't be dismissive and write it of a kid's stuff because of how he delivered his humor. He was great to me because I found him entertaining as a kid, but I soon realized that he was just that great as a performer.
